Resided in: Parsonsfield, Maine

¬PARSONSFIELD – Allyn W. Scott, 87, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, friend and hero, died from his battle with Parkinson’s disease Sunday, October 16, 2022, at a long-term care facility in Portsmouth, NH. He will always be remembered and deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Allyn was born December 16, 1934, in Brattleboro, VT, the son of Dean and Cherry (Whitehead) Scott. He graduated from Thayer High School, in Winchester, NH, class of 1952. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Marines in 1953. Allyn served as a loyal and dedicated member of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, at Iwo Jima Island in Japan, Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Camp Pendleton in California. While in the USMC, he held many critical roles: Drill Instructor, Military Prison Guard, and a Courier of top-secret documents and Administration (when it was learned he could type 90 wpm). He was also an Expert Level marksman. He retained a high regard for the Marine Corps his entire life. After being honorably discharged, Allyn lived in Maine, where he owned and operated a grocery and meat market in York. This is where he became a meat cutter by trade. He also pursued his love for commercial fishing as a boat captain in Perkins Cove, Ogunquit. He raised his children to enjoy running on shorelines and fishing docks and to develop a similar thrill for discovery of all things by the sea. After moving to Southwest Florida in 1971, his love for the ocean led him and his son back to commercial fishing on his own boat, the Scott Free. Eventually he returned to Maine. On January 23, 1988, he married his beloved wife, Selina (Thibeau) Scott, and they settled in Parsonsfield. They would have celebrated 36 years of marriage in January 2023. Allyn and Selina enjoyed being self-employed running their logging business called Yardstick Enterprises. Their mutual love for each other, gardening and nature dovetailed nicely with life together on their quiet ten-acre homestead in the Maine woods. His sense of humor, frankness and observation skills made him an engaging storyteller and conversationalist. He was also quite the jokester, depending on the occasion! His daughter Laury said, “He’s the best listener I’ve ever known. He was always patient to hear others speak.” Allyn had a voracious, life-long passion for learning, and of books, which he collected by the thousands, and was a generous teacher of skills acquired. His son Barry said, “Dad was my hero, a proud Marine and commercial fisherman. He taught me everything it takes to be a hardcore sailor and do it right. He expected the best from me and I’ll be satisfied with my life if I’m half the man he was”. Allyn was happiest when he was giving. His daughter Lynda said, “When sharing my candy as a child, he asked me, “Why did you give them just one piece?”. With dad, you’d always get a handful-or two!” He especially liked buying ice cream for everyone on hot summer days. He disliked disrespectful behaviors and trivial conversation. He also had a particular disdain for squirrels on his birdfeeders, groundhogs under the shed and disliked driving over really high bridges (perhaps due to the time his commanding officer in the Marines made him parachute out of an airplane-an experience he never wished to repeat). He will be greatly missed by those whose lives were made richer by his love. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Clay, his first wife, Virginia, and nephew Jeff Thompson. Surviving in addition to his second wife, Selina (Thibeau) Scott, is his son Barry Scott of Fort Myers, FL; his twin daughters Lynda Scott of Nashua, NH; and Laury (Scott) Levesque and husband, Scott, of Hudson, NH; Two grandchildren, Rachel (Scott) Amadio and husband, Tony and Rebecca Scott and husband, Jerry Farrell, all of Fort Myers, FL; Three great-grandchildren, Alexys Amadio, Colt Amadio and Chelsea Farrell; sister, Sybil Dupuis, of Wells, ME; niece Cindy Thompson of Pensacola, FL; and nephew, Kent Thompson of Wells, ME; Four step-children, Robert DeMerritt and Brian Lawson of Old Forte, TN; Sam Mooney, and wife Jennifer, of Austin, TX; David Mooney of Canandaigua, NY; Amie (Mooney) White and husband, Shawn of Falmouth, ME; Thirteen step-grandchildren, Mairead and Gavan Mooney of Austin, TX; Alex Mooney of Kenmore, NY; Brandon and Ainsley White of Falmouth, ME; Brett DeMerritt, Ashley DeMerritt, Dyna DeMerritt, Breyden Lawson, Nate Lawson, Colby Lawson, and Selena DeMerritt all of Old Forte, TN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 26, at Holy Family Catholic Church 66 North Ave, Sanford, ME. A military committal service will be held 12 p.m. prompt at the Southern Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery 83 Stanley Rd, Springvale, ME. 5. After the company I worked for filed for bankruptcy and I lost my job, Allyn and Selina reached out to me to help them do some logging work for a couple of weeks in December. One day, the truck broke down and my cousin and I worked under the hood in the cold to try to fix the issue… I was not too much help as I am not a vehicle mechanic by any means. Allyn got out of the truck after letting us try (It was very cold out) and with a smirk, fixed the issue. Even though we didn’t get any logging done, he paid me anyway. I’ll never forget his kindness.
