Allan Smith, 86, of Sanford, ME, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 24, 2008 while traveling in Virginia.Allan was born in Nova Scotia on December 18, 1921 to Daniel and Lavinia Frederick Smith. He graduated from Lowell High School in MA in 1939 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a registered HVAC engineer with the State of Maine for over 30 years. In 1967, he moved to Sanford to work for Stilphen Engineering and eventually became owner of the company. He also owned various rental properties, which he enjoyed renovating and maintaining.Mr. Smith was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was dedicated to his family and friends, never hesitating to set aside his priorities to help somebody else. He was a very generous and giving person and never had a bad thing to say about anybody. Allan enjoyed life's simple pleasures and knew how to stretch a dollar. He was very handy, frugal and independent. He enjoyed traveling, particularly going to family functions and to the family farm in Nova Scotia. Mr. Smith was a former member of the North Parish Congregational Church and a member of the Alfred Parish Church where he was a past member of the church board. He was also a former member of the Sanford Planning Board. Allan will be remembered as a generous and loving person and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.Surviving are a son, Bruce Smith of Palmdale, CA; a daughter, Jill McCormick and her husband Bob of Sanford and several grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, ME.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to Beacon Hospice, 42 Brickyard CT, York, ME 03909.To leave a message of condolence for the family, please click on the condolences tab to the left.
