Portland formerly of Winthrop- Alfredo Monsivais (Valdés), M.D., passed away peacefully at home on February 18, 2026, at 102 years of age. Alfredo was surrounded by loved ones and the sounds of his favorite mariachi music.
Dr. Monsivais was born on October 9, 1923, in Torréon, Coahuila, Mexico to Alfredo Monsivais Batres and Lidia Valdés Monsivais. He attended the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México for both undergraduate and medical studies, graduating with his Medical Doctorate in 1947. He began his internship and residency in Mexico. In 1951, Dr. Monsivais was given an opportunity to further his medical training in Boston, Massachusetts at Lynn Hospital and later Boston City Hospital. It was at Lynn Hospital that he met his future wife, Katherine Anne Monsivais nee Thompson (“Anne”) . They married on March 16, 1952. The newlyweds moved to Mexico and spent the next several years between Mexico and Massachusetts for work and advanced medical training, with Dr. Monsivais beginning his official professional career as a staff physician at Danvers State Hospital.
In the 1960s, Dr. Monsivais moved to Maine to work at the Augusta State Hospital as a staff physician and later transitioned into private practice in Winthrop, Maine. He closed his practice in 1978 to work at Togus VA Hospital, eventually retiring in 1998. Even in his retirement, Alfredo continued attending rounds at the hospital, reading medical journals and even attempting to read his trusted Harriman’s Principles of Internal Medicine book mere weeks before his passing.
Alfredo was beloved in the community by his many patients, friends, neighbors, fellow golfers, and especially, his family. Alfredo was a member of the Rotary Club in Winthrop, Maine and of the Augusta Country Club for over 40 years. He was an avid golfer and could be found on the golf course most weekends.
Alfredo loved nothing more than his family, a bright sunny day, and a good joke. He was a storyteller with a great sense of humor and kept those around him entertained. He believed in leading with kindness and was known for his generosity both professionally and personally.
Alfredo was predeceased by his parents, sisters Carmen and Marta, brothers Rodolfo and Alfonso, and son Michael. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Anne Monsivais, of nearly 74 years; his daughters Lydia Alberghini (Paul) and Marta McDonnell (Joseph); his daughter-in-law Beth Monsivais; his grandchildren Danizel Monsivais (Nastasia), Heather Monsivais (Thad), Katherine Monsivais, Erin Santana, Emily Arvizu (Adrian), Jonathan Alberghini (Cris), Brendan McDonnell (Tori), and Madelyn McDonnell ( Eric); and great grandchildren Alexia Santana, Ziv, Aviv, Jon Paul, and Lucas Alberghini, and Aiden Monsivais; and his many treasured nieces and nephews and friends that became family.

Uncle Al loved peach ice cream, mashed potatoes, not so much. He was kind and thoughtful, and generous. We were blessed to have him in our lives. -
To a great man and of course I loved playing golf riverfront when I was in Maine. Or thoughts are with the family who loved you dearly.
