Alexander Stevenson

Alexander Stevenson, 77, of Shapleigh, Maine, passed away on Thursday May 26, 2005 at Maine General Medical Center in Portland. Alex was born at home in Port Glasgow, Scotland on December 19, 1927, a son of Alexander and Agnes (Fraser) Stevenson. He had one brother and two sisters all older than him. One sister passed away at the age of 18 from Tuberculosis. He moved to Greenock on the River Clyde, a shipbuilding town at the age of 11.His father was a licensed physical therapist & masseuse. His mother was an "at home" Mom. He went to work at Hastie's Ship Steering-Gear Co.at the age of 16 1/2 as an apprentice engineer, where he remained employed for 5 years as a fitter. At the age of 22 he went to sea as a jr. marine engineer with the India Steam Navigation co for 2 1/2 yrs. He sailed to Hong Kong, Manchuria, Calcutta, & Malta. He then returned to Scotland where he began classes for certification as a 2nd engineer but became restless, moved to Toronto Canada and went to sea again on shell Canadian tankers. He sailed between Portland, Maine and Venezuela for 3 years working as a marine engineer. In 1956 he returned to land and began employment for Roelfson elevator Co. installing elevators. In 1957 he sustained a serious eye injury and after recovering from eye surgery remained with the elevator co., but in a different capacity.He met Maisie, his wife in 1957. He moved to MA in 1958 where he began a 21 year period of employment for Reece Corp., based in Waltham, a machine that manufactured industrial sewing machines. He was a maintenance mechanic. The company relocated and his job was terminated. He then worked for BLH Electronics also in Waltham for 2 years. He then worked for BLH Electronics also in Waltham for 2 years. He then went to work for Meadowbrook School in Weston as a building and grounds superintendent where he remained employed until his retirement in 1992.He was a semi-pro soccer player in Scotland, playing with the Port Glasgow Rover for 5 years. He was also a Master Mason of the Scottish Rite A.F & A.M.He is predeceased by one brother, Donald Stevenson, two sisters, Greta Stevenson and Ruth McKinnon. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Maybelle "Maisie" (Sleeper) Stevenson of Shapleigh, one son, Scott A. Stevenson and his wife Debra of Tampa, Florida and several nieces and nephews.Visiting hours will be held on Monday May 30 from 5-8pm at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home 580 Maine Street in Springvale. Members of the Springvale Masonic Lodge #190 A.F. & A.M. are invited to gather at the funeral home for a Masonic Service at 7:30pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11am at the Crossroads United Methodist Church in Sanford with Rev. Leslie Petit officiating.In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to the Crossroads United Methodist Church PO box 290 Sanford Maine 04073.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home 580 Main Street Springvale.
