Albert R. Carrignan, 91, of Sanford, died April 3 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford after a brief illness.He was born in Sanford on February 23, 1918, the son of Ernest J. and Antoinette (Michaud) Carrignan, attended local schools and was a graduate of Sanford High School.Albert served in the US Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.After the war, he returned home and began a lifelong career in food service. He owned and operated a diner on Mechanic Street in Sanford then moved to California and worked as a chef on cruise ships. From there he went on to New York City where he worked in various restaurants. For 10 years he shared his skills as a culinary professor at the Sullivan County Community College in New York. He came back to Sanford and opened a diner at the corner of Pioneer Avenue and Washington Street that is still in operation today as the Third Alarm Diner. He retired several years ago, but still liked to dabble in little food and ice cream service operations.Albert was a member of the Sanford Elks Lodge and the Springvale Social Club.He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Irene (Parent) Carrignan, and by his brother Gilbert Carignan.Survivors include 2 daughters, Patricia Stough and her husband Carl of Sanford, Linda Demers and her husband Ron of Acton, granddaughter Carol Lantagne, her husband Charles and their son Christopher of Acton, granddaughter Christine Durocher, her husband Ron and their children Carl, Danielle and Matthew of No. Berwick, granddaughter Kimberley Richard and her husband Adam of Sanford, grandson Ryan Demers of Spain, and a sister, Gabrielle Greaves and her son John of Sanford.At his request there will be no services. Burial will be later in the spring in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford.
