SOUTH PORTLAND - Adelaide Elizabeth Luttrell, 97, of South Portland died December 7, 2013 after a brief illness. She was born on May 6, 1916, the daughter of Mark J and Anna Welch Flaherty. After her graduation from Cathedral High, she trained in Boston and then worked for Postal Telegraph in Portland until 1941. In later years, she also worked at Forestwood Nursery School. In 1939, Adelaide married Eugene Luttrell, who was her sweetheart for 62 years until his death in 2000. She was also pre-deceased by her sisters, Mary, Eileen, Dorothy, Helen, Rete and Agnes, her brother Matt, daughter-in-law, Pam, and great grandchild, Aiden. She is survived by her five children: Peter, of Raynham, Mass; Paul (Jessie) of Rockland, Maine; Chuck (Marie) of British Columbia; Sharon Jerome (Steve) of Raymond, Maine; and Sheila Holmes (Mike) of Seabrook, N.H. as well as 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. Adelaide was a woman who loved well and was well-loved. Every night, she named each family member in prayer right to the very youngest great-great-grandchild, and each of them loved her dearly. Her home was always full of friends who came to play cards, or to have a visit over a meal. Her phone rang often, and her most common phrase was: Why don't you come over?. Her faith was her cornerstone and she had been an active member at St. Patrick's, Sacred Heart, and St. John's Church over the years. Her family expresses their deep gratitude to the many people who cared for Adelaide over the years, especially her great friend, Chris Wissley, her attentive neighbors at Kingswood Park and the staffs of New England Rehabilitation Hospital and Gosnell Memorial Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please give a hug to those you love and donate to the charity of one's choice. Visiting hours will be held from 3-6p.m. on Tuesday, December 10th, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 12:15 p.m., Wednesday, at the chapel, followed by a 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough. 1. Dear Family, I am sorry to hear of Aunt Adelaide passing. The obituary was her true sentiment. I was hoping I could get to South Portland and Scarboroough but the weather is too chancy. I had left knee surgery October 1st and I am now going through re-hab. I had such wonderful times with Mom Nelson and all at Adelaide’s condo. The gang could play us young ones under the table. The old gang was certainly card sharp. She had a wonderful family. Adelaide was a treasure. You should be soo pround claiming her as your family.

  2. Dear Chuck, Marie and family… The three of us send our love, thoughts, and prayers to all of you! It’s funny how many of us have come to know Nanny, as Laurie fondly refers to her grandmother, through Facebook. A remarkable woman we are sure, and someone surely reflected through her family in Vancouver…
