Natural Organic Reduction

A Gentle, Green Alternative for End-of-Life Care

At Walker Cremations, Funerals and Gatherings, we understand that Mainers have a deep respect for the land, their families, and sustainable living. That is why we are proud to offer Natural Organic Reduction (NOR). This is a forward-thinking, environmentally responsible choice for final disposition that aligns with Maine values of conservation, simplicity, and care for the Earth.

What Is Natural Organic Reduction?

Also known as human composting, NOR is a process that transforms a body into nutrient-rich soil through natural microbial activity, aided by oxygen, warmth, and plant materials like wood chips and straw. It is a respectful and ecological way to return to the land, without the environmental impacts of traditional burial or cremation.

Over several weeks, the body gently decomposes inside a vessel, creating approximately one cubic yard of soil. This soil can be returned to the family, donated to conservation land, or used to nourish trees and gardens.

Why Mainers Are Choosing Natural Organic Reduction

Mainers are known for living close to the land and making practical, grounded decisions. NOR speaks to these values by offering:

  • Environmental Stewardship: No embalming chemicals, caskets, or fossil fuel combustion. The process relies on natural cycles.

  • A Local Legacy: The resulting soil can nourish forests, gardens, or conservation spaces right here in Maine.

  • Simplicity: NOR is a low-impact, straightforward process rooted in nature.

  • Connection to Place: Whether you grew up in Aroostook County, along the Midcoast, or near Sebago, NOR allows your final act to support the Maine soil and spirit.

What Does the Process Look Like?

  • Preparation: The body is respectfully placed in a NOR vessel with organic materials.
  • Transformation – Over 30 to 60 days, natural heat and microbial activity break the body down.
  • Curing and Return – The resulting soil is screened, cured, and either returned to loved ones or donated to local restoration projects.

The process is carried out with dignity, care, and full transparency.

Who Might Choose NOR?

Natural Organic Reduction is ideal for individuals who:

  • Lived a life rooted in sustainability

  • Want an alternative to cremation or burial

  • Seek a tangible legacy in the land they love

  • Value conservation and wish to reduce their carbon footprint

NOR especially meaningful for farmers, naturalists, gardeners, environmentalists, and anyone who feels a deep connection to Maine’s forests, soil, and shorelines.

Is NOR Legal in Maine?

At this time, Natural Organic Reduction is not yet legal in Maine. However, we anticipate that this option will become available in the near future as awareness and support for environmentally responsible end-of-life practices continue to grow.

Walker Cremations, Funerals and Gatherings remains at the forefront of this evolving conversation. We closely follow state guidance and maintain open communication with local and state regulators to help ensure NOR becomes a safe and legally accessible option for Maine families.

We are proud to be among the first funeral providers in the region actively preparing to offer Natural Organic Reduction, serving families from Portland to Presque Isle with care, transparency, and forward-thinking service.
