SANFORD—John Arthur Herrick, 75, of Sanford, formerly of Gloucester, MA passed away on Wednesday evening, January 1, 2025. He was born August 23, 1949, in Ludlow, MA to Arthur and Catherine (Kapinos) Herrick. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War, something he was immensely proud of. He then went on to have a successful career as a boat mechanic, working in several boatyards on the North Shore of Massachusetts. He truly loved being outside, working with his hands and being on the water and around boats. One of the things he enjoyed earlier in life was seeing the building of his dream lobster boat, the “Sea Robin” and spending his summers lobstering and fishing with his two kids. Every year he would take the boat up to Maine with his children and spend two weeks on Bailey’s Island in Casco Bay. John loved his dogs and had many over the years. They, along with his children and grandchildren brought him immense joy. He loved all things outdoors and rarely could sit still. Anyone could find him working on boats, motors, or house projects. Upon retirement, he settled in Sanford, Maine in a cabin on the lake with his wife, Janice Herrick. He spent his days puttering around the yard, boating, going to the shooting range, anything to be outside. In addition to his wife, Janice, he is survived by his children, John Herrick with partner Amy Cavender and Cheryl Herrick-Stella with husband, Jad Stella; grandchildren, Cameron Stella, Aiden Herrick and Trey Herrick; his sister, Diane Crafts; brothers, Ray Herrick and his wife LeeAnne, Steve Herrick and his wife Deborah, sister, Louise Rose and her husband Jim brother Tim Herrick; sister, Sally Peacey and her husband Bill along with his first wife Carol (Curtis) Herrick. He was predeceased by his parents. A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam on Friday March 14 at 3:00 pm In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to the MSPCA or Wounded Warrier Project
