Eileen Stokes Heald

August 11, 1949 ~ September 3, 2024
Resided in:
Sanford, Maine
Eileen S. Heald was born August 11, 1949 in Sanford, Maine, the daughter of Jarvis and Norma (Vose) Stokes. She graduated from Sanford High School in 1967 and from Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists in 1969.
Eileen worked in dental offices in Beverly and Gloucester, MA and returned to Maine and worked in the office of Dr. Raymond Beaudoin, Jr. in Sanford for ten years. During her career in dental hygiene, she especially enjoyed doing educational dental health talks at local schools.
She was married to John McLeod for thirteen years, the father of her daughters, Kristen and Lauren. In 1986, she married David Heald and eventually worked at his side at Heald Funeral Home.
Eileen’s passion was renovating and decorating homes. In 1985, Eileen was named McCall Magazine’s Reader of the Year, and was featured in the August issue that year. She was the recipient of a complete home makeover …and gifted with complete furnishings. She appeared on Good Morning America and experienced a full-blown makeover in New York City.
She served on the Board of Goodall Hospital, and on the Board of the Springvale Public Library during its renovation/expansion in 2000-2001.
When she and David retired to Florida in 2005, she became an accredited Home Stager and assisted David in his real estate career, while continuing to “flip” houses. In 2022, Eileen purchased a home in Springvale, and became a “snowbird.” Reconnecting with lifetime friends, including her beloved Craft Group/Book Group, brought her much joy.
Eileen was a member of Union Congregational Church, UCC in Holly Hill, Florida, where she served on the Board of Trustees and as Church Clerk.
Eileen will be remembered for her warm demeanor, heartfelt hugs, and thoughtful gestures to all her friends and family. She was cherished as a grounded, trusted confidant. She could also be counted on to bring levity and fun to any occasion. No one will forget her wicked sense of humor and silly antics.
She was predeceased by her husband, David Heald (2020); her parents, and a brother, David Stokes.
She is survived by her daughters, Kristen McLeod of Oakland, CA and Lauren Hatfield and husband James of Richmond, CA; grandchildren Mazi, Finn and Pippin Brooks and Augusta Hatfield; a brother, John Stokes of Camden, SC; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 7th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. A funeral service will be held at the Springvale First Baptist Church located at 429 Main Street in Springvale at 1:30 PM on Sunday, September 8th. Interment will take place on Monday, September 9th at 1:30 PM at the Riverside Cemetery, located on Riverside Avenue in Springvale.
Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
I have known Eileen my whole adult life. We met when our children were born, and we started a “mother’s group” doing crafts in the evenings and sharing parenting tips, and lots of great adventures! Our “craft group” morphed into a book groups once our children left the nest, and we have continued this tight knit friend love for over forty years!! I will miss you dear Eileen. You were there for all the milestones!! Rest in peace.
When you get to Maine, there will be chardonnay in your fridge, and poppy seed tea cake, a homemade cheese ball and Mary’s crackers for you in a basket!
She taught me that nothing was out of reach, that everything had a silver lining and that “this too would pass” given time and love. She was truly one of a kind.
I am from Maine and my husband and I were snowbirds. During our time in Florida we spent many memorable times together with Eileen and David. Those memories I will cherish forever.
My condolences to the family, wishing you comfort during this difficult time. Eileen will be forever in our hearts.
Eileen will be missed dearly. She will forever have a special place in my heart. My deepest condolences to her family.
My deepest condolences for the lose of Eileen.
Beautiful lady and a friend to everyone.
Her smile and great humor
Always had such a fun time camping with Eileen and David . Loved seeing her on Facebook later on.
Phyllis and I are so very sorry for your family’s loss. Eileen was one of a kind and will be missed
Eileen and David were members of our camping club
She always had a kind word and was extremely funny
I met Eileen in Lincoln, ME when we both resided there. We were so young just in our 20’s. My sincere condolences to Kristen, Lauren and family. It was my privilege to be Eileen’s friend and I will remember her as such a beautiful soul.
Eileen and I have been friends for as long as I can remember. I think the first picture we took together was when we were 13 at my birthday party with Casey, Linda N, Tina, and Linda V. You can see that Eileen even then did not take things too seriously. I will miss you – but your spirit will always be a part of me.
I am remembering Eileen with joy for her beautiful, smiling face and her quirky sense of humor. May she rest in peace.
Forever remembered in our hearts. You and Dave were part of my parent circle. I have such fond memories growing up and into adulthood. Sending love to you and Dave in Heaven.
Heartfelt condolences to Eileen’s family. She was such a kind and caring person. She will be missed by all.
I first met Eileen through our camping club. Being a New Englander myself, we immediately had something in common.
An inspiration to all who knew her
I met Eileen in 2018. Eileen had the rare gift of making people feel heard, valued, and deeply cared for and I felt we had been friends for more than six years. I will always remember her kindness, joy and laughter (and her signature necklaces). I am blessed to have called Eileen a friend. RIP, Eileen.
