Jean Carey

August 17, 2022
Jean Marie Carey, 88, of Wappingers Falls, was born in Bangor, Maine on June 2, 1934 and passed away on August 17, 2022 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Marie Ouellette, and sister of the late Beverly Freer and James Ouellette. Jean graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and Forsyth Dental School for Hygienists at Tufts University.
Jean was a lifelong athlete and loved sharing her passion for sports with many close friends. She was an avid skier and treasured spending time with her family and friends at her home in Vermont. She achieved several tennis singles and doubles championships throughout the years in Dutchess County, and coached the girl's tennis team at Our Lady of Lourdes High School for many years. Jean had a driving passion for golf and scored two hole-in-ones, her first in 1996 and her second in 1997. She also loved to give back and one of her most rewarding experiences was in the aftermath of 9/11, when she volunteered for weeks at St. Paul's Chapel in lower Manhattan feeding and caring for rescue workers.
Humor was very important to Jean and she encouraged everyone to find humor in life, especially in her later years. She loved the beach, Maine and all things New England, and spent many summers on the Maine Coast with her family. Most of all, family and faith were the centerpieces of her life. She loved nothing more than having a house full of family for Christmas, Thanksgiving or the annual Lobster Feast where she could be found sipping a Perfect Manhattan. She was always eager to help out her children, and would often be found at her grandchildren’s sporting events, art shows, musical performances or dance recitals. She was a faithful follower of the Catholic Church and was a member of Saint Kateri in LaGrange.
Jean is predeceased by her husband Joseph Carey and son Thomas Carey. Jean is survived by five children and their spouses, Dan and Carol Carey, Anne-Marie and Greg Williams, Ruth-Anne and Charlie Hrebenach, John and Deborah Carey, Mark and Heather Carey. In addition, Jean is survived by eleven adoring grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom were her pride and joy.
A private family memorial will be held in Maine in July with burial in the family plot at St. Ignatuis Cemetery in Sanford. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in memory of Jean Carey to the Music Therapy Program of Gifted Musicians, Hudson Valley Hospice Foundation, 80 Washington Street, Suite 204, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
