Jason “Jay” Smith, 37, of Saco, Maine passed away peacefully on February 5, 2023 after a brief illness. Jay was born on March 20, 1985 to Ellston Smith and Michele (Bergeron) Smith. Jay grew up in Sanford, Maine, where he enjoyed playing sports with the town and in the backyard with the neighborhood kids. He perfected his art for grilling at his first job at Bonanza, a skill he later turned into a passion in which everyone was welcome to one of his backyard gatherings. He graduated from Sanford High School, where was captain of the football and baseball teams his senior year. Jay went on to attend the University of Maine, Orono, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. Jay was known for his exuberant personality and open heart. He valued the many friendships he made and found joy in spending time with family and friends in the simplest of ways. He embraced being a “girl dad” and summers in the pool or riding around with the music blaring were all that he needed. Jay is survived by his daughters Brynlee and Brielle and their mother, Lacey, his mother Michele and her husband Bob, his father Ellston and his wife Angela, his sister Lacey and her partner Todd, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. with a Memorial Service at 2:00 P.M. at the Calvary Baptist Church, located at 47 High Street in Sanford, Maine. A celebration of life will take place immediately following, the details of which will be announced at the service. 1. It is with great sadness that I write this to Jay’s family and friends. He was a great young man and I loved his passion for sports and our school. I’ve thought about him often over the years and it always brings a smile to my face. May you all find peace and you all are in my thoughts and prayers. He will be missed by so many. Coach O
