Shirley M. Barto, 86, of North Berwick passed away peacefully with her loving husband by her side on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, NH. She was born on September 30, 1936, to Rodney and Francis Scoville in Lubec. The family moved to Portland when she was just a little girl and where she attended local schools graduating from Portland High School. She attended Westbrook Community College for a time. She then married the late Robert Sargent and they moved to North Berwick where she raised her family. Shirley was the school secretary at the Mary Hurd Academy in North Berwick for many years. Shirley could always be found with a camera in her hand. Photography was her passion and she loved photographing her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was her grandchildren's biggest fan and never missed a school or sporting event. She was loved very much and will be dearly missed. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Robert Sargent (1980), her stepdaughter Renee Conpher and stepson Robert Barto. Survivors include her beloved husband Charles Barto of North Berwick, children, Michelle Howard and her husband Elton of Saco, Michael Sargent and his significant other Lisa of Berwick, and Melissa Allard and her husband Daniel of Lebanon, stepdaughter Lynne Houwman and her husband Keith of Minnesota, her half-brother Martin Read III and his wife Jan of Auburn, grandchildren, Nicole, Megan, Mandy, Eric, Amy, Justin, Tara, Isadora, Ariella and Nathan, 14 great grandchildren. 1. My dearest friend and pal for over 80 years, through the good, and not so good times.
We were always so grateful that we grew up in the best of times.
To Chuck, and all of Shirl’s family, my deepest condolences. She was another sister to my brother Alan and will be greatly missed by us both.
My love to you all, Adie

  2. Aunt Shirley will be missed by many. I loved visiting with her and my Uncle when they came to Minnesota, and even chased them down when they were on their way up North just so I could visit. Prayers to all of Shirley’s family and sending much needed hugs 🫂 and prayers for Chuck. Love ❤️ Carla

  4. Although I have not met any of you folks, I express my deepest condolences to you all. Shirley and I grew up together in Portland and went to Butler School together, graduating in 1950 as the last class to graduate when it was for grades 6, 7, & 8. We then went our separate ways, Shirley to Portland High and I to Deering High. We then met up once again when we attended Westbrook Junior College. Again, my deepest sympathy to all of you.

  5. I am so sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. I have only pleasant memories of the brief visits we shared. My sincerest condolences to Chuck and their entire extended families. RIP Shirley.
