Elizabeth D. Sweet
Elizabeth Jane Dutton Sweet, aged 93, died on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at her home in Brookline, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of the late Irene Dutton and Mason H. Dutton and the sister of the late John M. Dutton. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. William H. Sweet in 2001.She was born and raised in Sanford, Maine where she graduated from Sanford High School in 1942. She graduated from Dana Hall in 1943 and in 1947 she graduated from Connecticut College Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude with a B.A. in English literature.Always active in alumni affairs, she served as President of the Connecticut College Women's Alumnae Association and as a member of the Board of Trustees from which she received the Agnes Berkeley Leahy Alumnae Award in 1969 and in May 1997 she received the Alumni Tribute Award from the Connecticut College Alumni Association.Mrs. Sweet was employed for 40 years as Executive Secretary for the Chief of Neurological Service at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts where she was also Trustee and Treasurer of the Neurosurgical Foundation. Mrs. Sweet traveled extensively with her late husband, Dr. William H. Sweet who was a world acclaimed neurosurgeon and in great demand as a lecturer. Dr. and Mrs. Sweet endowed the "William and Elizabeth Sweet Professorship in Neuroscience" at Massachusetts General Hospital. Mrs. Sweet was a devoted family member, and her broad experience, intelligence, boundless energy and generous spirit will be greatly missed. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley R. Dutton; her niece, Jane C. Dutton; her nephews, William M. Dutton, Watson R. Dutton and David S. Dutton and his wife, Judith A. Dutton and their children, Sara E. Dutton, Katherine J. Dutton, Julie A. Dutton, Emily J. Dutton, Christopher J. Dutton and Christy M. Dutton.Mrs. Sweet was a long-time member of the North Parish Congregational Church, 895 Main Street, Sanford, Maine 04073. Donations may be made in Mrs. Sweet's name. The family wishes to thank all of the staff involved with Mrs. Sweet's care to whom we are deeply grateful for the excellent care they provided.A memorial service for Mrs. Sweet is planned for July 2018 in Sanford, Maine for family members only per her wishes.
