Donald E. Keefe, 96, of Springvale, died peacefully on Tuesday April 26, 2016, surrounded by family at the VA Hospital at Togus. Donald grew up in Lebanon, Maine on a farm with his 13 siblings and father James and mother Effie Keefe.He joined the Army at the beginning of WWII and was stationed in England and Germany where he drove ambulances for an Army medical hospital. He was discharged at the end of the war with the rank of corporal.Donald was a generous and frugal man who loved his family. He built the home in Springvale that he shared with his wife Mary (Betts). Mary was the love of his life and they were married for 69 1/2 years when she passed 4 years ago. Donald was a carpenter for many years and after he retired he spend a lot of time working with the Brothers of Christian Instruction in Alfred helping them make maple syrup and selling apples in the farm stand. He is survived by his children: Susan Keefe and partner William Hale Jr of Freeport Maine and James Keefe of Springvale. Three granddaughters: Heather Gibson of Pownal Maine, Meagan Gibson of Beverly Ma and Jenny Jo Collin with her husband Philippe Collin plus 3 great granddaughters Alivia, Reese and Fynleigh Collin. Visiting hours will be May 4th from 11AM to 12:30PM at the Carl-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street Springvale. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 1 PM at the Southern Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Springvale. Condolences may be expressed at www.blackfuneralhomes.com
