Paul E. Affleck, 82 years old, died June 6, 2003 at his home in Shapleigh, ME after a long illness surrounded by his beloved family and wife of 57 years Yvette Douin Affleck.He was born on August 31, 1920 in Springfield, MA. He was the son of the late George Baird and Mabel Cobb Affleck.Paul invested most of his life working with those less fortunate. His giving nature, exuberance for life and passion for humanity will be his gift for all who knew him. "He loved life," said his wife through tears, "but he never lived it selfishly."Mr. Affleck lived the majority of his life in Massachusetts. While living there he created a list of accomplishments unsurpassed by others. He was educated at Mt. Hermon Prep School, Wilbraham Academy, was a graduate of Brown University, and received a PhD. From Ohio Christian College. He spent several years, as Executive director of Goodwill Industries in Springfield, MA, was executive director of Residential Rehabilitation Centers, Inc., which was a treatment center for emotionally disturbed boys and girls. Before his retirement in 1983 he was president and treasurer of Avalanche Inc., a full service resort in Manchester, VT.Over the years Mr. Affleck held various offices in government and was appointed to several committee's by the Governors of Massachusetts Volpe and Sargent, as well as President Nixon himself. Numerous awards were presented to him over the years for his dedication to the overall welfare of the less fortunate.Mr. Affleck was an Army Veteran serving in the European Theatre, an Eagle Scout, author of several textbooks related to health and hygiene, and at one time the authority on the sport of soccer in the United States.He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. He enjoyed a good game of golf and valued the friendships made over the years. He often took pleasure in the little thing in life like a beautiful sunset.Paul touched many lives. He brought happiness and joy to many people. He was a loving husband and friend to his surviving wife Yvette Douin Affleck. He leaves behind his wife, two sons, Glenn Affleck of Avon, CT, Wayne Affleck of Hyannis, MA, a daughter Bonnie Romano of Shapleigh, ME, six grandchildren; Duane Paul, Kevin and Heather Romano, Kelly and Laurie Affleck, and Daniel Affleck. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren; Mathew, Adam, Timothy, Leana, and Jaron.Graveside services for Mr. Affleck will be held on Wednesday June 11, 2003 at 10 AM at the Riverside Cemetery in Springvale, ME. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society Research Center.
