Born in: Manchester, New Hampshire
Resided in: Sanford, Maine
David C. Handy, 67, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2026, at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland.
David was born on December 8, 1959, in Manchester, New Hampshire, to Dorothy (Chickering) and Lyle Handy. He grew up in Troy, New Hampshire, where he attended local schools, and later attended Keene State College.
David spent his career in marketing and merchandising for grocery stores before retiring five years ago. An outdoorsman at heart, he loved spending time with his beloved dogs, hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and mountain biking. He was also an avid hunter and enjoyed boating. One of his favorite places was his home in Rangeley, where he could be surrounded by nature.
David shared 40 years with his wife and best friend, Johanna Handy. A private person by nature, he was known as a loyal friend to those fortunate enough to know him well. With David, you always knew where you stood, as he was honest and straightforward, whether you liked what he had to say or not. When he cared about someone, he did so wholeheartedly. His love for his family, friends, and dogs was the most important part of who he was.
David was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Handy, and his beloved dogs, Zen, T’ai, and Jet.
Survivors include his wife, Johanna Handy, of Sanford; his father, Lyle Handy of Marlow, New Hampshire; his siblings, Lyle “Tiger” Handy, of Sullivan, New Hampshire, Julie Alexander and her husband, Leon, of Swanzey, New Hampshire, and Eric Handy and his wife, Karrie, of Troy, New Hampshire; his nieces and nephews, Shawn Handy, Matthew Goodell, Stephanie Alexander, Stacey Spoor, Juno Handy, Tommy Handy, Colby Handy, and Bryan Davis; and his beloved dogs, Yuki and Sestra.
