October 14, 1940 ~ October 3, 2026

Nonnie, just shy of her 86th birthday, peacefully passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Born October 14, 1940, the daughter of Sal and Tac Riter, Nonnie left this world with the same spirit of determination, stubbornness, and grit that guided her well-lived life.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Nonnie spread her wings to homes from Florida, through the Jersey Shore to Falmouth, Maine, where she lived for over twenty years with her “boys”, two Maine Coon cats, Diesel and Benji. She is survived by: her devoted son Scott and his wife, Maggie; her four grandchildren Kelly; Patrick and his wife Shannon; Ian and his fiancée Victoria; Austin; and her two great-grandchildren Roran and Rian. She is also survived by: her beloved sister and best friend Susie and her husband Dickie; brother Jen and his wife Janie; brother Mike and his wife Kim; a clutch of precious nieces and nephews; and a cadre of devoted friends too many to count. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Nonnie was a creative force, a devout and nurturing friend, a multi-talented professional, and a Jane-of-all-trades. From phlebotomist and medical office manager to horse show wrangler and real estate mogul, there was nothing she couldn’t tackle. Her most precious gift was always lending an ear, a shoulder, or a set of hands whenever someone needed them.

Her friends and loved ones remember snowy toboggan rides down Mountainside Park, Christmas Eve snuggles waiting to hear Santa on the roof, catching the record-setting grouper, river boating through Europe, dog-sledding and helicopter rides over Alaskan glaciers, snow birding between her happy places in Maine and Florida, ice cream, peanut butter, sipping coffee, breakfast for dinner, and deciding who loved turtles more.

A kind and sympathetic friend, Nonnie always put others before herself, spreading her warmth, humor, wisdom and kindness to all those she touched.

Nonnie’s eternal message to us all is to BELIEVE and to take comfort in knowing that her renewed spirit is soaring high above the clouds with the angels. She will be missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of life will follow at a later date.
