Ronald V. Flaherty, “Rico”

Ron Flaherty, affectionately known as “Rico” to his firefighter comrades—a nickname earned for his batting abilities on the softball team—passed away at the age of 89 after a full and remarkable life.

For 67 years, Ron shared his life with his beloved wife and bride, Paulette. Together, they raised four daughters and built a family grounded in love, hard work, strength, and unwavering support.

Ron dedicated much of his life to serving others. He served as a U.S. Navy combat medic, including service in Cuba, before settling in South Portland, Maine. He later served his community, for 25 years, as a firefighter and EMT with the City of South Portland. His commitment to helping others was simply part of who he was.

A true jack of all trades, Ron could fix or build just about anything. He was a skilled carpenter and a professional truck driver, both before and after retiring from the City of South Portland. He had a particular passion for older vehicles, often buying them and bringing them back to life until they once again shined.

But perhaps Ron’s greatest accomplishment was the life he built with his family. He worked hard to give his wife and daughters the very best he could, always offering his sound advice, guidance, and a helping hand. He was a pillar of strength—someone his family could always count on to be there when needed, whether it was to lend a hand, solve a problem, or simply listen.

After retirement, Ron and Paulette spent 25 wonderful years enjoying the sunshine and warmer days in Florida before returning to Maine to be closer to their family.

Ron was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Paulette; his four daughters, Catherine Flaherty, Elizabeth Delano, Rhonda Kennedy and Colleen Whitaker, 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth Olson and Roslyn Flaherty, along with many extended family members, friends, and former comrades whose lives he touched. He is predeceased by his parents William G. Flaherty and Irene A. Filieo.

Ron leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, determination, humor, and love. He taught his family by example—to work hard, help others, fix what can be fixed, and always be there for the people you love.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by the family who was so fortunate to call him Dad, Grampy, and husband.
