William “Greg” Tinsman

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved brother, dad, uncle and friend, William G. “Greg” Tinsman, 70, who passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at his home in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Born on October 5, 1955, in Portland, Maine to parents Robert L. Tinsman and Ruth E. (Cookson) Tinsman. Greg grew up in Cape Elizabeth in a large family of five brothers and one sister. He attended Cape schools and graduated from CEHS in 1973. While at CEHS Greg played basketball and was a standout baseball player, known as a great hitter.

Greg devoted nearly five decades of his life to serving others in several local communities. Greg first began his public safety career in 1974 as a reserve police officer with the Cape Elizabeth Police Department. He also served with the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department, dedicating 32 years to both. From 1988 to 1998, he served as Cape Elizabeth’s Director of Emergency Management. His career then continued as an award-winning dispatcher, being honored by the Maine Association of Police as Communications Officer of The Year in 2015. Greg worked as a dispatch officer for Kennebunk and Sanford before retiring from the Scarborough Police Department in April of 2022.

While Greg’s career was defined by his commitment to helping others, those that knew him best will remember his quick wit, his art renderings, his wonderful yet twisted sense of humor, and his ability to tell a good story.

Greg’s greatest legacy will be the lives he touched through his decades of service, mentorship, kindness, humor and friendship. One of those special and unique friendships was with a feathered friend named, Eric, a seagull who came to visit him every day. He would feed Eric hot dogs, and this bond brought Greg so much joy and became a cherished part of his daily life.

Greg is survived by his daughter Lindsay Crowley (Derek); granddaughters, Brooke and Kiley Crowley; son, Nicholas Fogg; brothers, Richard E. Tinsman (Diane), Thomas M. Tinsman and Larry P. Tinsman (Mary); along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Greg was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Ruth Tinsman; sister, Roberta Maietta; brothers Dennis Tinsman and Douglas Tinsman; nephews, Gary Maietta, Aaron Tinsman and Louis B. Maietta, Jr.; and most recently, his beloved cat, Goldie.

Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, September 3 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A service celebrating Greg’s life will be held on Friday, September 4 at 11:00 am at Conroy-Tully Walker followed by a processional to one of Greg’s favorite places in the world, Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth.
