Paul Ralph McNutt

Paul Ralph McNutt, 93, of Springvale, Maine, formerly of Beverly, MA, passed away August 24, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones and cat Duke.

Paul was born May 28, 1933 to Virginia and Herman McNutt. He lost his mother at the age of 2 years old and was raised by his Uncle Ray and Aunt Leena for two years until his father remarried his new wife, Mary Cravatis. His sisters, Phylis and June continued to live with their grandparents while Paul, Robert, and Raymond lived with their father. Mary took good care of the boys. Later, Herman and Mary had a son, John.

One of his fondest childhood memories was sharing a rocking horse with his first cousin, Anne.

His loving sisters, June and Philip always looked after him in school. Uncle Bob and Aunt Madeline “adopted” him and continued to be a special part of his family’s life. Paul and Germaine’s son, Shawn, loved waking up Uncle Bob with the sound of a bugle!

Paul’s step-grandmother described the person he would marry – a woman with black hair and blue eyes. And sure enough Paul met his beautiful wife after corresponding for 6 months. Their eyes finally met at St. Anthony’s Shrine in Boston. They married in 1973.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Germaine, Rheaume McNutt. They have one son, Shawn McNutt, a daughter in law, Leigh, and 2 young grandsons, Greyson and Miles. Paul and Germaine helped raise their nephew, Stephen during his teen years. They have maintained a very close relationship with him.

Paul earned both academic and vocational degrees from Beverly High School, joining the Air Force after graduation. All 3 brothers, Bob, Raymond, and Paul all served in the U.S. Air Force.

His life and passion was printing from the time he was in high school until he retired and moved to Maine. He continued this passion for the rest of his life.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for about 35 years in Beverly, MA as well as the Annex in North Beverly and Johnny Appleseeds as well.

Paul had special relationships with many stars who performed at the Beverly Summer Theatre. He would take care of their mail and give “special delivery” to the likes of Charles Laughton, Imogene Cocoa, etc.

During his time at the Post Office, he unknowingly collected and delivered items for the “Unabomber.” Paul was involved with the FBI and investigations.

As a young adult while working as a postal worker he was involved in a train accident traveling from Swampscott, MA. He was asked to climb into the engine because of his small stature to check on the engineer who had been mangled in the wreck. Paul was considered a hero.

He also drowned when he was a young man, however, his biological mother who passed away when he was two came to him and said, “It’s not your time. Go back.” He was pulled out of the water and was revived.

He and his father ran into St. Alphonsus Church in Danvers, which was not his parish, as it went up in flames to save the articles inside.

As he was growing up, his whole family was active participants in the world famous Bugle and Drum Corps in Beverly, MA. He also helped run the organization as an adult.

Paul loved singing, especially solos at church – his favorite song was How Great Thou Art.

He loved golf and won many trophies at Myopia Country Club. He often played with his father, Uncle Tootsie, Father McGowan, and other well known priests.

Paul and Germaine enjoyed their special trip to see The Statue of Liberty with Uncle Raymond and a close friend.

He was an active member of many organizations such as VFW, DAV, and The American Legion. He began his involvement with the Knights of Columbus at age 18 in Beverly, then he became the 4th degree in Saugus. When he moved to Sanford, Father Nadeau asked Paul to start and run the St. Thomas branch until he fell ill.

He volunteered all of his life in many ways, including The Beverly School for the Deaf.

The McNutts have appreciated the help of their long term caregivers and friend, Theresa.

Paul McNutt was a wonderful man with an exceptional sense of humor!

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 AM on Friday, September 4^th at the Black-Heald & Walker Funeral Home, located at 580 Main Street in Springvale.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, located at 66 North Avenue in Sanford.  Interment with military honors will be held afterwards at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located at 83 Stanley Road in Springvale.  A reception will be held at a location to be announced will be held following the interment.
