Born in: Madawaska, ME
Resided in: South Portland, ME

South Portland – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gloria Theresa Soucy, 94, a woman whose life was a tapestry woven with love for her family, unwavering loyalty, and a resilient spirit. Gloria passed away on August 12, 2026.

She was born in Madawaska, Maine, on May 21,1932, the daughter of the late Wilfred and Maryanne (Cyr) Michaud. She graduated from Sanford High School.

Gloria’s life was defined by her deep dedication to those she loved. From an early age, she excelled in the kitchen, developing a special talent for cooking and baking. She delighted family and friends with her homemade birthday cakes and, in the 1960s, rekindled her passion for French cooking after watching Julia Child and Graham Kerr. Her family was the fortunate and grateful audience for her many culinary creations.

Above all, Gloria cherished time with her family, whether in Fort Kent or at her beloved camp on Cross Lake. She found great joy in watching her children ski at Lonesome Pine in the winter and sail or water ski on the often-tempestuous lake in the summer. Evenings were spent admiring brilliant sunsets over the water while her family gathered to enjoy meals she had lovingly prepared. She was a devoted mother who insisted her children respect traditional values, get a good education, work hard, never quit and fulfill our responsibilities. The world needs more voices like Gloria’s and her presence will be deeply missed.

An avid reader, Gloria’s love of books led her to become an assistant librarian at the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the mid 1970s. Around that same time, she and her husband, Albert Soucy, developed the concept for what would become Gas-N-Go Foods, a business that exceeded their expectations. Gloria remained a board member until her final days. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, she became affectionately known as “Gas-N-Go Mama” by local radio DJs, who recognized her both from the college library and as a familiar face behind a beloved local business.

Gloria was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Albert Soucy, and her three brothers, Roderick, Pat, and Richard. She is survived by her five children, Mark Soucy and his wife Noelyne Labbett, John Soucy, Kate Soucy, Louise and her husband Bill Zafirson, and Lora Soucy; cherished grandchildren, Garrett Soucy, Ryan and his wife Joi Mei Soucy, Grant and his wife Olivia Soucy, Clark Soucy, Spencer and her husband Alex Van Dorn, Parker Brown, Blake and his wife Jill Zafirson, Audrey and her husband Michael Antoniou, Austin and Libby Moreau; great-grandchildren, Izzy Soucy, Koa and Kai Soucy, Louie Soucy, and Palmer Zafirson.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to The Lodge at Stroudwater in Westbrook and Compassus Hospice in Scarborough for the exceptional care provided over the past seven months.

In accordance with Gloria’s wishes, there will be no visitation.
Arrangements are under the direction of the new Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral, Cremation, and Gathering Center, 300 Allen Ave. Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gloria’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or online at stjude.org.

Guestbook

  1. Louise and Bill- so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a mother and especially after the long period of decline. Our condolences to you both and your family.

  2. My husband Dick and I spent 8 years in Fort Kent in the 2000’s and were grateful and happy to find friends in Gloria, and Al. I enjoyed many fun Friday lunches with Gloria and Dick enjoyed golfing with Al. And the parties! Your Mom was such a cheerful, joyful person to be around and a great example. May they rest in peace.

  3. Dear Mark, John, Kate, Louise, and Lora,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your sweet mom. As one of her nieces, she was my favorite aunt. She always had a smile on her face and a delicious treat for us like her Blueberry Buckle and Coconut Oatmeal cake. We loved going to visit you all in Fort Kent and always hated to leave you as we had so much fun at your home.
My memories will live on and she will always have a tender spot in my heart.
    Your cousin, Patti
