Mary “Maureen” Curran, age 89, of Portland, Maine, passed away on July 26, 2026.
Mary was born on May 31, 1937, in Portland, Maine to Martin Curran and Margaret Curran. Known for her independent spirit, she lived life on her own terms with strength and plenty of humor. She loved to travel and explore, and always emphasized to get out and see as much as you can.
She possessed a fierce passion for helping those in need, always looking out for others in her community and her life. Mary expressed her deep love for people through the written word. Every year, she wrote hand-written letters by the dozens. She made it her personal mission to commemorate every birthday, holiday, and milestone in the lives of the many people she loved, ensuring everyone felt valued and remembered.
Affectionately known as Aunt Mo, by the many who loved her. She was a strong proud Irish American and the families historian, and NEVER missed a single detail.
She had a heart that would not quit, a deep love of all sweets, but nothing near as sweet as her generosity to others. She gave to countless charities and causes yearly.
Her eyes were bluer than the Atlantic, they certainly gave merit to the song “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”,
She will be deeply missed, and left a legacy of integrity and love that is timeless.
She is predeceased by her brother Thomas Curran of Portland and sister Barbara Ashley of Westbrook.
She is survived by her sister Ann Comtois of Dracut MA, as well as nephews Kevin Comtois and Michael Comtois of Dracut, MA, Martin Ashley of Scarborough ME, Sean Ashley of Strafford NH, Richard Ashley of Portland, ME, Brendan Curran of Portland ME and niece Tara Curran of Portland ME.
