Margaret “Peg” Whitten, 99, of Acton, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, at the Lodges Care Center in Springvale.
Peg was born on February 24, 1927, in Barre Town, Vermont, the daughter of the late James and Amanda (Copeland) Hanney.
She spent much of her early life in Massachusetts, growing up in Lowell, where she attended local schools. She later lived in Wakefield, Massachusetts before settling in Acton, Maine, where she made her home for more than 40 years.
From an early age, Peg was a natural caregiver. As the oldest of five children, she assumed many family responsibilities, helping care for her mother during a lengthy illness and taking on a motherly role for her younger siblings.
Peg was married twice and was widowed twice. She took great pride in caring for both of her husbands, each a World War II veteran, allowing them to remain at home until the end of their lives.
Inspired by her lifelong dedication to caregiving, Peg returned to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked for many years at Mainstay in Sanford before establishing herself as a private-duty nurse. She continued caring for her clients well into her 80s, a testament to her genuine love for helping others.
Peg had many talents and interests that enriched both her life and the lives of those around her. She was an accomplished amateur Scrabble player who traveled throughout the Northeast competing in tournaments. An exceptional quilter, she handcrafted more than 300 quilts, using only cotton fabrics and generously shared them with family and loved ones. Her beautiful work earned numerous blue ribbons at the Acton Fair.
Peg was also well known for her baking. Visitors rarely left her home without a freshly baked pie, and family and friends often compared the delicious flavors they were fortunate enough to receive. She was an avid reader who enjoyed cryptograms, crossword puzzles, and word games, and she was known as something of a “card shark”.
Peg was an intelligent, compassionate, and generous woman whose greatest joy came from caring for others. She was a devoted mother, a gifted caregiver, a loyal friend, and an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Her kindness, strength, and love for her family will be forever cherished.
She is predeceased by husband Ervin Mullett, and Norman Whitten, a brother James Hanney and a sister Annabelle Yeomans.
Survivors include her three sons, Ervin Mullet of Woolwich, Maine; George Whitten and his wife, Janet of Seadrift, TX and Mark Whitten from Acton, ME; her grandchildren, Edward, Michael, Kristopher and Matthew Mullett, Jay, Alex, Hope, Margaret, Lydia, Oliver, Abigail, Meridith and Angela Whitten as well as Amanda Whitten and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She also has a brother Jack Hanney and a sister Rita Mooney, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 8th at 11A.M. at St. Mathew’s Catholic Church 19 Dora Lane, Limerick. Interment will follow after the Mass at Maple Grove Cemetery on Milton Mills Road, Acton, ME at approximately 12:15pm.
