Marie R. Smith

November 20, 1930 ~ June 14, 2026

Marie R. Smith, 95, passed away on June 14, 2026, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on November 20, 1930, in Paterson, NJ, to Francis and Laura Sappah Mullin.

Marie lived a life marked by love and fun with her family. She often traveled with her daughters to Boston for shopping and the annual Christmas Festival. She was a homemaker most of her life until a business trip with Eddie to buy new equipment landed her a job at Tennford Weaving Company. She was known for her fun camping trips, snowbird travels, motorcycle rides, and quilting. She mostly enjoyed going for a ride with Eddie and just driving until they found new places to go. Her favorite saying was ” I love my family!” She was so proud of her daughters, sons-in-laws, and grandchildren, commenting daily on their accomplishments.

After retiring, Marie moved to Sebastian, Florida, with Eddie to live during the long winter months. They remained in Florida for the winters for many years, returning during the spring to be with family. In 2005, they decided to move back permanently to Maine to be closer to their family.

Marie is survived by her 3 daughters, Judy Smith, of Sanford, Laurie Ackroyd (Greg), of Sanford, and Tracy Papa (Charlie), of Fairmont, WV, and 5 grandchildren, Mallory Karolides, of Sanford, Andrea Thomas, of Sanford, and Victoria Karolides, of Wells, Nicholas Papa, of Tampa, FL and Vincent Papa, of St. Petersburg, FL. Also surviving are her cherished great-grandchildren, Logan, Emma, Reid, Riley, Finn, Remi, Jackson, and Lucas, all of them were the apple of her eye!

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward Smith.

There will be a Celebration of Life held on Friday, June 26th at 2:00pm at her daughter Laurie’s house at 18 Deborah Ave, Sanford. Feel free to stop in and reminisce. This is a casual gathering.
