Hui Young “Sunny” Sutton

June 12, 2026

Hui Young Sutton, born 정 희영 in South Korea, better known to all as “Sunny”, passed unexpectedly on June 12, 2026, with her family and friends by her side.

Sunny was a spirited presence, known for her fire, confidence, and her only form of footwear was her signature high heels.

She married Paul Sutton on December 6, 1976, in Korea, and soon after moved to Estes Lake in Alfred, Maine. As she built a new life in a new country, Sunny attended Pierre’s School of Cosmetology and went on to open the iconic Sunny’s Hair Care in Sanford, Maine.

In addition to being an accomplished cosmetologist, Sunny was also an exceptional cook. In the mid-2000s, she sold her salon to open Nara, a Japanese Korean fusion restaurant in South Portland, Maine. Even as she pursued new ventures, she continued renting a booth at her former salon and remained devoted to her longtime clients until her passing.

Sunny was also a longtime member of Rainbow United Methodist Church, a Korean American church where she gathered each Sunday with family and friends.

Sunny had a green thumb and took great pride in keeping her vegetable and flower garden in beautiful condition. She also enjoyed playing Go-Stop, a Korean card game, with her friends and looked forward to trips with them to Foxwoods and Encore.

Sunny raised two children, her son Jay, whom she lovingly called her “Baby Boy,” and her daughter, Dena, whom she affectionately called “Dena Baby.” She was Jay’s biggest fan, cheering him on at every opportunity. Whether he was on the basketball court, the football field or the baseball field, Sunny’s enthusiastic support was impossible to miss.

Sunny also treasured time with Dena, especially their dinner dates and trips together to her favorite Korean store, H-Mart. She regularly made kimchi for her daughter, a simple but meaningful expression of her love and care.

Sunny is survived by her daughter, Dena Young-Sutton Lunn, and her husband, Christian Lunn, of Portland, Maine; her son, Jay Paul Sutton, his fiancée, Lauryn, of Alfred, Maine, and their three children—Sunny’s beloved grandchildren, Henry, Natalie, and Lennon Sutton; her sister, Jeong Ran Young, and brother-in-law, Kim Kyeong Sun; her nephew, Yoonsu Kim; and her niece, Eunhye Kim. She was also briefly survived by her dog, Teddy, who passed away one day later on June 13, 2026, of a broken heart.

Sunny was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Paul Sutton, and her parents, Chong Chin Han and Kim Su Nam.

Sunny will be greatly missed. Relatives and Friends are welcome to gather between 4:00 and 7:00 PM Tuesday June 23, 2026, at Black-Heald & Walker Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street, Springvale, Maine.

In honor of Sunny’s lifelong love of flowers, the family welcomes floral tributes as a celebration of her bright, colorful spirit.
