Debra Allen Cunningham

April 19, 1951 ~ May 24, 2026

Debra Allen Cunningham, 75, of Kennebunk, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026 surrounded by her family at her home in Kennebunk after a lifelong battle with Crohn’s disease and complications with liver cancer.

Born in Farmington, Maine on April 19, 1951, “Debbie” was the daughter of Roger Allen and Jean Heald Allen. She grew up in New Sharon, Maine and attended local schools, graduating in the top ten of her class from Mt. Blue High School in 1969. She attended Husson College, where she met James “Jim” Cunningham, of Sanford. After a whirlwind courtship, the two were married on June 13, 1972, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span almost 54 years.

She was a devoted, loving mother to her two children as the family settled in Wells, Maine. Her working life included librarian, historian, Longaberger basket salesperson, and mail carrier for the USPS for 25 years. She was a dedicated Girl Scout troop leader and service unit volunteer. Debbie was also a costumed volunteer at the Old York Historical Society for many years.

At 12 years old, Debbie was gifted a family genealogy book from her grandfather, Frederick Allen, thus forming the beginnings of a lifelong passion for genealogy. She spent countless hours documenting the genealogical ancestry of her and Jim’s families, and some friends’ families too. Her other hobbies included reading, sailing on the coast of Maine, and painting ceramic dolls. She loved music, especially P!nk, Ed Sheeran, and many country music artists. Debbie was a big fan of the Boston sports teams, specifically the New England Patriots. She loved to travel and had been to Ireland and Scotland. As retirees, Debbie and Jim spent several winter vacations on the islands of the Caribbean together.

One of her favorite places on earth was the family camp in Mercer, Maine on North Pond. She enjoyed going for a boat ride, swimming and reading on the deck. Camp was a haven for extended family and friends to make countless summer memories together, including boat rescues and the annual fourth of July parade. Her camp bestie, Louise Proulx, and Debbie would sit in the water all day chatting until their fingers pruned.

She shared a close-knit circle of women friends who proudly called themselves the “Wicked Wild Women,” cherishing decades of trips, celebrations, and time together throughout her adult life.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, Roger and Jean Allen, and several of her much-adored aunts and uncles.

Debbie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim Cunningham; her sister, Laurie Powell (Scott Powell) of Kennebunk; her son, Nathan Cunningham (Anna Perron) of Kennebunk and her daughter, Janna Cunningham (Sara Hicks) of Kennebunk. She absolutely treasured her grandchildren, Avery Swett, Noah Bove, Evan Cunningham, Seth Cunningham, Jacob Cunningham, and Harper Cunningham, and her great-grandchild, Levi Swett, plus beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

She will be missed more than she could have ever imagined. Her kindness, patience, grace, generosity, and love were unmatched.

Visiting hours will be at Black-Heald Walker Funeral Home on Saturday, May 30, from 5:00-7:00pm. The funeral service will also be at Black-Heald Walker Funeral Home on Sunday, May 31, from 1:00-2:00pm. All are invited to the reception that will follow the funeral at 11 Briarwood Lane, Kennebunk, Jim and Debbie’s home for food and refreshments. There will be a private burial on Monday, June 1 at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North Pond Association (northpondmaine.org) or to the Kennebunk Free Library (kennebunklibrary.org).
