Richard Thompson

PORTLAND – Richard B. Thompson, Sr., of Portland passed away at The Cedars on May 17, 2026, at the age of 93.

Richard “Dick,” “Tommy” Thompson was born August 16, 1932, the second son of Harland and Katherine Thompson. He attended Westbrook schools and graduated from Westbrook High School with the class of 1951. He married Virginia Nash in 1952 and they had 3 children. Sadly, Virginia passed away in 1976. In 1977, Dick married Benitia (Beni) Lawless and adopted her 2 sons.

Dick worked at Forest City Chevrolet for 40 years and then for Bill Dodge Auto Group until retirement in 1995. He and Beni enjoyed golfing at Riverside South, traveling, family get-togethers and summers at the camp on Sebago Lake.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Robert, and his first wife, Virginia. He leaves behind his wife Beni; son, Richard, Jr. (Joyce) of Oakland; daughter, Linda Meyer McAloon of South Portland; son, H. Scott (Cecile) of Cumberland; and sons, Joseph and John of Portland; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren (another expected in August); and 7 great-great grandchildren with another expected in Fall of 2026.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Cedars and Hospice of Southern Maine for their care and guidance.

Visiting Hours honoring his life will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the new Conroy-Tully Walker Cremation, Funeral and Gathering Center, 300 Allen Avenue, Portland. A memorial service will start at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Funeral Home. A livestream of the memorial service will start at 1:45 PM and can be accessed on the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home Facebook page the day of the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the new Conroy-Tully Walker Cremation, Funeral and Gathering Center, 300 Allen Avenue, Portland.
