Hugh Costello (1930 to 2026)

SOUTH PORTLAND – Hugh Patrick Costello, known affectionately by his family as “Opie”, passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy defined by deep devotion to family.

Born in South Portland to Peter M. Costello and Mary W. (Moran) Costello, Hugh attended South Portland public schools and graduated from Bowdoin College with a degree in history.

Hugh’s life was shaped by the city’s maritime heartbeat. Growing up on the doorstep of the South Portland shipyards, he developed a lifelong passion for history and logistics that would define his professional and personal pursuits.

In 1951 Hugh married Kay Frances Griffin of Portland. They settled in Portsmouth, NH to raise their growing family.

After returning to South Portland, Hugh joined his father’s business as a steamship agent. He became a respected fixture at the Maine State Pier, later expanding the business to include customs brokerage. His expertise in international trade and maritime logistics earned him a reputation for integrity and sharp intellect within the Portland harbor community.

Beyond the waterfront, Hugh was a historian at heart. A gifted storyteller, he had a unique ability to understand historical arcs with personal anecdotes, making the past come alive for everyone who listened. Whether discussing history, geography, literature, his Irish roots, or local lore, his wisdom was a cornerstone of family gatherings. Hugh’s love of literature, classical music and gardening has rippled down through generations of his family.

Later in life, Hugh’s never-ending thirst for knowledge led him to USM’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for seniors. There he met a group of men affectionately referred to as “my OLLI pals”. Over the course of his life, which spanned almost a century, these friendships were among his most treasured.

Hugh was predeceased by Marguerite “Peg” Hendrick (his beloved wife of 40+ years), and his brother CDR. Peter M. Costello Jr.

He is survived by his six children and their spouses: Kevin (Robin), Brenda (Ruby), Maureen (Brian), Mark (Deborah), Katherine, and Justin (Julie). He also leaves behind a large, vibrant family of many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will remember “Opie” for his warmth and wit.

Hugh’s Visiting Hours will be at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway, South Portland on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 4-7 PM. His Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM in Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road South Portland Interment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Hugh’s memory to the South Portland Food Cupboard or South Portland Historical Society, continuing his legacy of care for the community he called home.
