James H. Smith

James H. Smith, 55, of Sanford, passed away at his home on Friday, March 13, 2026.

James was born in Sanford, Maine on March 27, 1970, the son of Gordon and Barbara (Gerry) Smith. He grew up in Sanford and attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School with the Class of 1988. Shortly after graduation, James proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country for eight years. During his time in the service he was deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm, an experience that remained a point of quiet pride throughout his life.

Following the completion of his enlistment, James briefly lived in Michigan before returning home to the community he loved. He began his career as an electrician at CYRO, where he worked for several years before accepting a position with Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick. Through hard work, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility, he advanced into a management role before later transitioning into digital technology. Over the course of more than two decades with the company, James earned the respect of colleagues for his reliability, steady nature, and strong work ethic.

Outside of work, James found joy in simple pleasures and time spent with those he loved. He was a talented musician who enjoyed playing the drums, and he especially liked spending time outdoors working around his yard with his tractor. He took particular pride in owning and caring for his antique Allis-Chalmers tractor. James also had a well-known fondness for coffee and chocolate, two small comforts he rarely passed up.

Above all else, James was devoted to his family. He cherished time with his children and especially loved playing and laughing with his young son, Jackson. A calm and even-keeled man by nature, James was known for his easygoing personality and steady presence. He was dependable, hardworking, and deeply committed to providing for those he loved. His family always came first, and his kindness, patience, and quiet strength will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his father, Gordon Smith, Sr.

James is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Flandermeyer of Sanford; his three children, Michael Smith of Sanford, Katey Stearns and her husband David of Rockland, and Jackson Smith of Sanford; his beloved granddaughter, Annabella Jean Stearns of Rockland; his mother, Barbara Smith of Sanford; his siblings, Libby Smith of Sanford, Frank Smith and his wife Karen of Sanford, and Gordon Smith, Jr. and his wife Tina of Scarborough; his father- and mother-in-law, Brian and Ann Flandermeyer of Cincinnati, Ohio; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, March 20th at the Black-Heald & Walker Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 21st at the Sanford First Baptist Church, 905 Main Street, Sanford.
