William (Bill) W. Boynton

April 19, 1939 ~ March 4, 2026

Scarborough – William W. Boynton, 86, passed away on March 4, 2026. William (Bill) was born on April 19, 1939, in Portland, son of the late Everett B Boynton Sr, and Dorothy (Lucas) Boynton.

Bill grew up in a loving home in Cape Elizabeth and graduated from Kents Hill School. Following a short period of youthful misadventures, he enlisted in the Army and spent nearly three years as a courier and driver based in Stuttgart, Germany, logging thousands of miles on the Autobahn. He met people from all over the country and world, and nurtured a lifelong love of nice cars and long road trips.

When he returned, he enrolled at the University of Southern Maine and earned a degree in Business Administration. He had a long and accomplished career working in insurance claims management for Aetna and MEMIC.

For nearly 60 years, he was married to the love of his life, Barbara, with whom he raised six children in their Yarmouth home. They met at Matty’s Dine and Dance in Westbrook, and Bill was immediately smitten. Over the years, he was the most appreciative audience for Barbara’s legendary cooking and refused to let anything go to waste. He taught just about everyone in the family how to drive. He was a deeply good-natured, supportive, and present husband, father, and grandfather.

He enjoyed a range of hobbies – from playing cards (which culminated in an appearance on the Maine Poker Tour that showed on public access television, much to the delight of his family), to biking around greater Portland, to going out for clam cakes and ice cream with Barbara on sunny summer days. He loved watching history documentaries, wearing silly hats – stylish, if you asked him –, and could often be found cheering on his grandchildren at every performance or sporting event on their calendars. More than anything, he was always there when his family needed him.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, who passed away in January; and his brother, Everett B. Boynton Jr. He is survived by his children, Pamela and her husband Steve Collins, Thomas and his wife Barbara McCabe, Kathleen McCabe and her partner David Conrad, Diane McCabe, Karen and her husband John Johnston, and Kristen Boynton Hirsch; grandchildren, Jason Batchelor, Patrick Batchelor, Allison Starr, Jody McDaid, Tyler Collins, Andrea Theriault, Jessica Meahl, Nikolle Heuer, Evan Johnston, Hannah Johnston, Simon Hirsch, and Alayna Hirsch; great-grandchildren, Lola, Lex, Ryder, Shea, Carlie, Charlize, Calla, Connor, Andrew, Emelia, Van, Rose, Maeve, and Lyra; sister, Elizabeth Boynton; and many dear friends and extended family members.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Maine Medical Center and Gosnell House, who cared for Bill in his final days.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday March 10, 2026, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway.
