Alfred Bonti, 91, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Pinnacle Health and Rehabilitation Center in Sanford, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 11, 1934, to Atillio and Angelina (Mortola) Bonti, Alfred was the youngest of three children. He grew up in Huntington Station, Long Island, and graduated from Huntington Station High School. Soon after, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving four dedicated years. While stationed at Loring Air Force Base in northern Maine, fate brought him together with the love of his life, Lorraine Mathieu. They married in 1957, built a beautiful life together, and raised five children. Their marriage was a remarkable partnership of nearly 60 years until Lorraine’s passing in 2017.
Following his military service, Alfred and Lorraine lived briefly in New York before returning to Maine, where they put down deep roots. Alfred began working at General Electric in Somersworth, New Hampshire in 1962 as an inspector, where his sharp mind, attention to detail, and unwavering work ethic earned him respect. He remained with the company until his retirement in 1990.
Alfred’s life outside of work was filled with love, hobbies, and cherished moments. He and Lorraine owned a camp on Lovell Lake for many years, where they welcomed family and friends for countless summers. Later in life, they spent winters in Florida, soaking in the sunshine and enjoying time with friends. Alfred was an avid golfer, frequenting courses such as the Sanford Country Club and The Salmon Falls Golf Course, and he especially treasured rounds played alongside his grandchildren. In earlier years, he enjoyed fishing, building intricate model railroads, operating ham radio, and bowling.
A devout Catholic, Alfred was a longtime communicant of St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford, where he served faithfully in various roles, including as a Eucharistic Minister. Though he was a quiet man, he had a warm humor, a steadfast faith, and a deep love for his family and friends. He took pride in his Italian heritage and found joy in sharing it with those around him. Above all, Alfred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather — the kind of man whose life set a shining example for all who knew him. Alfred’s legacy will live on in the memories of those who knew and loved him — a man of quiet strength, deep faith, and a heart that always put family first.
Alfred is survived by his five children: David Bonti and his wife Gina of Springvale; Anthony Bonti and his wife Claire of Sanford; Kathleen Hutchinson and her husband Garland of Sanford; Angela Morse and her husband Donald of Lyman; and Peter Bonti and his wife Debbie of Kennebunk. He was blessed with 15 grandchildren — Zachariah, Aaron, Rebecca, Megan, Krystal, Joseph, Sonja, Brittany, Donald IV, Cailley, Kyle, Chad, Sean, Ryan, and Tyler — as well as 13 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family members.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, at Black-Heald & Walker Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18, at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, North Avenue in Sanford. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.

I worked with Al on 4A at GE. He loved to talk and everytime I would pass him at his desk he always called me smiley. He was very sociable and he enjoyed his job. RIP Al. Prayers to you and your family.
We are devastated to learn of our brother-in-law’s passing. Al and his wife, Lorraine, always had room for us when we visited Sanford. We also remember the wonderful vacation we took with them when they visited with us. We visited Memphis, TN and visited Elvis Presley’s mansion and then went on to Branson, MO and took in lots of entertainment venues. What fun and memories! Godspeed, Al. You are now free from pain and enjoying the vision of our Lord Jesus Christ.
