John F. Murphy

Westbrook – John F. Murphy, 91, of Portland, passed away on July 10, 2025, at his home. John was born on June 21, 1934, in Portland, son of the late Martin and Ellen (McDonough) Murphy.

John was proud to have grown up in Portland’s Gorham’s Corner, attending grade school at Staples School. He graduated from Portland High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force with his best friend, Bill Grant. Following his honorable discharge in 1958, he married his childhood friend and sweetheart, Marion Fagone, in 1959. Together, they built a life and raised their children in Portland.

John worked for many years at the U.S. Post Office, retiring early at 55. During this time, he also worked part-time as a longshoreman, unloading ships on the waterfront. He was deeply rooted in his community and gave back in many ways. John was a longtime member of several organizations, including The Boys Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Knights of Columbus. In recent years, he was a communicant of St. Hyacinth Church in Westbrook.

Proudly 100% Irish, John loved Irish music and was known to play a lively tune on his harmonica. He was well-loved for his sense of humor and his gift for making people laugh. More than anything, John cherished time spent with his family.

John is predeceased by his wife, Marion (Fagone) Murphy and brother, James Murphy. He is survived by his children, Patrice Perreault, John M., and Patrick Murphy; grandchild, Joseph H. Perreault III; best friend of 81 years, William Grant; and beloved nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of Portland, 172 State St. Portland. A burial with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
