Annie “Sue” Wiemert, 86, passed away on June 14, 2025. She was born on May 27, 1939, one of seven children to J. Freeman and Marjorie Knox Johnson in Portland.
Sue grew up on Kirkland Avenue in South Portland. The family moved to Highland Avenue in South Portland when Sue was 16.
On May 19, 1962 Sue married John “Jack” Wiemert at Sacred Heart Church in Portland. Sue and Jack spent the early years of their marriage on Granite St in Portland. After the birth of first child, the family moved back to the Thornton Heights area of South Portland. Sue remained in the same house on Grandview Avenue until shortly after Jack’s passing in 2019.
Sue worked various jobs over the years including housekeeping at Maine Medical and Answer Phone of Greater Portland before retiring from Fielding’s Oil in Scarborough. However the job she enjoyed most in her life was that of being “Nana”. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren, and proudly displayed their pictures for all her visitors to see.
More than anything Sue was known for her warm, giving heart and her quiet generosity. No matter her own circumstances, she was always ready to help someone in need.
As a talented knitter, Sue expressed her love with hand knit gifts. At first it was mittens and hats. That grew into baby sweaters and blankets. Soon it was Irish Knit sweaters. No matter what item was made, every stitch was perfect.
She is survived by her daughters Wendy Wiemert of Tampa, FL and Ann Wiemert-Slater and her husband Dr. Daniel Slater of Grand Junction, CO., and grandchildren Ellen, Sabina and Jack Slater of Grand Junction. She is also survived by her beloved sisters Ellen Belanger of South Portland, Paula Harnden of Windham and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Jack, siblings, Edna, Walter, Leon, Bill, and her parents.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at 75 State St for the care Sue received while residing there. And to Emily, Tracy, Michael, and Crystal of Beacon Hospice the family is deeply grateful for the support, grace, and dignity you provided to Sue and her loved ones.
