Constance “Connie” M. Carpenter

Constance May Naylor Carpenter, 90, passed away peacefully at her home on May 15th, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sanford, Maine on February 16, to parents Augusta and Thomas Naylor. She had one beloved sister, Betty, who predeceased her.

Connie attended local schools and graduated from Sanford High School in 1953. She was married to her one and true love, Hazen Carpenter, in 1954 and began restoration of the home.

Hazen was drafted into the Army in 1956 and Connie followed him on his deployment and spent 1 year in Germany. Their daughter Holly was born in 1958. They welcomed their son Harold in 1962. And then son Thom Otis came to them in 1967.

Connie was a hard worker and outstanding woman of her time where she worked for the Waterboro Leather Company and an Engineering Firm in Sanford. She was the V.P. and secretary of the Carpenters’ company H.E. Carpenter Inc. up until its closing in 1995. She always demanded respect but helped lead with wise leadership and council along with Hazen, together they formed a great business relationship. Carpenter Christmas Tree Farm was founded by the family on Connie and Hazen’s land, and she helped guide the business to success for all of its 22 years.

Connie took much pride in her civic duties, some of which were serving on the United Way Board, the PTA, the Sanford Historical Society, she was a Justice of Peace and had a Maine real estate license. Along with that, she was the backbone of Hazen for the many community projects that he undertook as a part of the Kiwanis Club, the Trails Committee and the Sanford Land Trust.

Connie and her husband Hazen were well traveled across both the continental United States and the world. From visiting all of the United States capital cities or to explorations to more tropical climates to enjoy what this beautiful world has to offer. She was grateful to be able to see and experience so many different cultures and regions along with her and Hazen’s adventures. She shared many stories of humor, stress, awe and happiness that were made along the way.

Connie was always well dressed and ready for any occasion or social engagement. Her smile, expressions of love and gift of communication made friends and relationships with anyone she met wherever she went.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family and to all her many friends, especially the Thursday night Girls who met for a lifetime. Connie was the matriarch to all in the family. She was always looked up to by family members for her advice, sharp wittedness, humor and excitement for life and kindness.

She is survived by her husband Hazen, daughter Holly and her husband Dave, son Harold and his wife Lisa, son Thom and his wife Debra, eight grandchildren and 10 grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at the Carpenter home.
