South Portland – Margaret “Peggy” O’Callaghan Tilley, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 14th in South Portland, Maine. She was 79 years old.
Born on October 16, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Margaret Tully O’Callaghan and James A. O’Callaghan.
In August 1966, Peggy married the love of her life, Cecil Tilley. Their early years together were spent following Cecil’s naval career, making homes in Brunswick and Florida before settling permanently in Maine in the 1970s. It was there that they welcomed their daughter, Cassandra, completing their family.
Peggy’s greatest joy came in 2004 with the birth of her grandson, Hunter. Peggy and Cecil relocated to South Portland during their retirement years, allowing them to be closer to Cassandra and Hunter.
Those who knew Peggy will remember her as a woman of remarkable talents, an exceptional cook who could transform simple ingredients into memorable meals. Her garden flourished under her care, and she expertly canned the results to provide food for the family every winter. Peggy’s skillful hands created clothing for her family and beautiful quilts that will be cherished heirlooms for generations to come.
Peggy is survived by her devoted husband Cecil Tilley, her loving daughter Cassandra Tilley, and her cherished grandson Hunter Cichon, all of South Portland, Maine. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss her dearly.
She was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and James O’Callaghan; and her brother, James P. O’Callaghan.
Peggy’s legacy of love, creativity, and generosity will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
