Scarborough – Louis Meisheid, 84, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025.

Born on November 28, 1940, he was the son of Louis and Edna Meisheid. He grew up in Paterson, New Jersey and went to local schools where he excelled in the trades. He later served in the Army from 1959 to 1962. When he returned home he went to work for Ragen Machinery and later Tracer Tool and Machine where he was a skilled machinest. He then met Frances while enjoying one of his favorite past times, roller skating. They later married in 1966.

Together, they had three children. Always the supportive father, he helped them achieve their goals and was proud to endlessly brag that he had raised both a doctor and a lawyer. But, without a doubt, his pride and joy was “Miss Tara Leigh.” His world revolved around their many activities such as bowling, swimming, horseback riding, mini golfing, the gym and many, many rounds of Jenga.

Louis was the epitome of the type of man who would give anyone the shirt off his back. Always humble and kind, he was known by all his friends and neighbors as the person who would help them with anything. His values of hard work, selflessness, and of doing the right thing even when no one was watching, will continue on for generations. His grandchildren know him as their “Poppy Lou” who had the unique ability to help a newborn fall asleep on his chest and who never seemed to tire of singing “one, two, buckle my shoe”. Poppy Lou always had time to build toys, take walks and talk about their lives.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Frances; his children Paigeann Cohen (Richard), Tara Meisheid, and Tamra Longanecker (Philip); and his seven grandchildren, Angela Cohen, Caite Cohen, Grace Longanecker, Jason Cohen, Hannah Cohen, Emma Longanecker and Luke Longanecker. His absence will leave a bottomless hole in their hearts, but they know that they will see him again one day.

All services are private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland.

As he would say, “See you later, alligator.”

Guestbook

  1. Dan and I are so Blessed to have known Poppy Lou and to make memories. His heart was huge and his soul was pure. He brought smiles to peoples faces and warmth into the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Soar with the Angels and take the love and memories we all had for you with you.❤️

  2. I offer my most sincere sympathies to the entire Meisheid family on Lou’s passing. The man who taught me how to mix cement, lay down rebar and pour a sidewalk, among many other carpentry necessities on my old house, was always there with a smile and a chuckle. Fran and his girls were always the center of his life. Seeing the family at St. Mary’s Church and choir remains a cherished memory of mine. Heaven has welcomed home a very special man. Sending prayers, a warm embrace, and love to Fran, Paige, Tamra and Tara. ♥️🙏🎶
