G. Wallace “Wally” Ackroyd, 97, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, in Kennebunk, Maine. Born in Sanford, Maine, Wally dedicated his life to his family, community, and profession, leaving a legacy of leadership and service. A proud veteran, Wally served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, demonstrating the same dedication and integrity that would define the rest of his life. Following his service, he built a distinguished career in banking and business, serving as President of Sanford Trust Company, President and Director of Northeast Bank of Sanford, and President of Lavalley Lumber. His expertise and leadership extended beyond his immediate roles, as he also served as President and Director of the Maine Bankers Association and as a Director of the Maine Retail Lumber Association. His contributions helped shape the economic and financial landscape of Sanford and beyond. Wally was also a tireless advocate for his community. He served as Director and President of the Sanford Community Health Association, President and Trustee of the Goodall Library, Treasurer of the Sanford Sewage District, Director and President of the Sanford Chamber of Commerce, and Trustee and President of Goodall Hospital. His civic involvement reflected his deep commitment to improving the lives of those around him. Above all, Wally was a devoted family man. He shared 69 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Jeannine. Wally leaves behind a loving family including his son Jim and wife Lyn of Naples Florida, his son Dave and wife Jo of McKinleyville California, and his son Greg and wife Laurie of Sanford Maine. He was also a cherished grandfather to eight grandchildren and a beloved great-grandfather to ten great-grandchildren. After retiring to Naples, Florida, Wally later returned to Kennebunk, where he spent his final years surrounded by loved ones. He will be remembered for his wisdom, generosity, and unwavering commitment to both his family and community. A private family service will be held in his honor. Wally’s legacy of service, leadership, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

I will always remember his ability to make me smile. He had a song for everything and a smile that would light up a room. While in college he gave me his old station wagon so I could get around. I was homesick a lot that first year and would drive to see him and grandma on the weekends. Before I went back to school my car was always washed and the gas filled up. He would tell me it was the “magic driveway”. He always made sure I was taken care of.
I will remember him for His ability to read people and realize their potential.
