Born in: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Resided in: Falmouth, ME

Margaret MacKay Weller, 90, of Falmouth, Maine, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 17, 2025 with family and friends at her bedside. She was a beloved wife, a proud mother and “Nana,” a cherished sister and friend, and a dedicated nurse whose warmth, humor, and selfless spirit touched everyone who knew her. Margaret was born on April 26, 1934 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of David and Mary MacKay. In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband, the “love of her life,” Donald Weller. They were devoted to each other for 53 years. She was also predeceased by two brothers, George and Donald MacKay. Margaret is survived by her sister, Allison (Graham) Bloomer, sister-in-law, Shari MacKay, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews in the United States and Canada. Margaret was the mother of two sons, Mark (Shawn) and Brad, who were the center of her world. She and Don raised them to be caring, responsible men who loved and supported each other and their families. She was “Nana” to her four grandchildren, Lauren (Brian) Haggard, Eric (Emily) Weller, Addie Weller, and Alden (Bailey) Weller and her three great-grandchildren, Alexis Medley, Caiden Haggard, and Finlee Haggard. Margaret was known for her vibrant red hair, which perfectly matched her zest for life. She was fun, warm-hearted, and always the life of the party or family gathering. She and her husband were known for their “ECP’s” (emergency cocktail parties) with their friends at Spinnaker Point, a special community they enjoyed for over 20 years in Punta Gorda, FL. Margaret enrolled in nursing training at Winnipeg Grace Hospital in 1952 after graduating high school. In 1956, she joined her girlfriend Dorothy in northern Manitoba. The two young, adventuresome nurses went out on Bombardier snowmobiles to assist in delivering babies and caring for families on an Indian Reservation for nine months. In 1957, the two ladies found an ad in a nursing magazine and headed south to Redwood, CA. They eventually grew tired of the night shift and moved to Berkley, CA. There, Margaret met Donald at a church social event. They were married on March 8, 1958, just days after Donald’s discharge from the Army. They started their family in Syracuse, NY and moved to Cape Elizabeth, ME in 1967. Margaret spent her life caring for others, offering comfort and compassion to those in need. She practiced private duty and medical OB/GYN nursing for many years. After retirement, she continued to stay connected with her nursing colleagues and joined them for monthly dinners. Margaret and her husband cherished family time. Every summer, they traveled to Winnipeg for a month to spend time with Margaret’s mother, siblings, and cousins at their family cottages on Lake Winnipeg at Victoria Beach. Family reunions soon became a tradition, always kicking off with commemorative t-shirts and Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.” The Wellers built a second home on Lake Pennesseewassee in Norway, ME in the early 70’s. Summers and winters in Norway became their rhythm. Margaret, Donald, and the boys loved boating, fishing, and hosting summer parties there. In the wintertime, they enjoyed skiing at Mt. Abram and Sunday River with friends. For her sons and grandsons, hockey became their true passion. As they grew up, the sport connected them with a close-knit community that felt like family – especially to Margaret. Above all, Margaret deeply loved her family and friends. Her kindness, love, and unwavering support touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered. On behalf of Margaret and her family, we would like to express our eternal gratitude to Kelle, Margaret’s long-term healthcare provider, and the staff at Falmouth House at Ocean View. A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on May 31 at Conroy-Tuller Walker Funeral Home: 1024 Broadway, South Portland, ME. Visitation/luncheon 11-1pm; Service 1:00pm; Private family graveside service 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local Red Cross or animal shelter in memory of Margaret’s generous and loving spirit.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I will forever look back at all the fantastic memories of my Aunt Margaret with a smile on my face and a ton of love in my heart! So many great times we all had together at our MacKay-Weller family reunions over the years. It started in 1978 with our “surprise” mobile home trip from Canada to the Weller’s camp in Norway, ME – or as we named it – “Camp Wella!”. This was where our theme song was forever solidified for this, and all future family reunions to come – Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock & Roll”! We laughed and partied so much on that trip that we vowed to keep it going over the coming years. From there came reunions at Victoria Beach and at “The Barn” up in the lake country in Manitoba, Canada. One of the best parts of our get togethers were the crazy skits we performed. One memorable skit involved making a scene at the Winnipeg Airport when Margaret’s son Mark and wife to be, Shawn, came in for a reunion a couple of months before they were to be married. Myself and my father George dressed up as the bride and groom to be – but in true crazy fashion – there was a huge twist!… George was the bride, dressed with a white curtain for a dress, holding some tiger lilies from the garden and myself as the groom, in a 3 pce suite, cowboy boots and cowboy hat! Soon as Mark & Shawn came through the Customs doors we cranked up “Old Time Rock & Roll” and danced around the room! We even had other passenger’s families dancing with us! They knew the Canadian contingency of the family was going to do “something” upon their arrival…but they weren’t sure exactly what!

There were so many great times with Margaret. She was such a loving person who always made sure to let you know how special you were to her. But we were the ones who were most fortunate – to have her in our family, and for as long as we did. Family meant everything to her, as did all her friends. What a beautiful soul she was!
She will be missed immensely by everyone in her circle. I feel truly grateful to have had her as my Aunt! Until we meet again Margaret, love you so much!

  2. The ECPs at Margaret and Dons were the best.
Such wonderful memories of out time at Spinnaker Point in Punta Gorda. RIP Margaret

  3. Margaret was an inspiration to me .Her love of life and her joy was infectious , as of course was her laugh ! Her ECP parties at Spinnaker Point helped create the close Community we call home . She and Joe just loved teasing one another, all in good fun. We loved her and she will be sorely missed . RIP Margaret

  4. We will miss Margaret so much. She was one of the most loving, caring, generous and fun people we have ever known. We have lost a very special soul.

  5. Sid and I are so very sorry to hear Margaret has passed . I looked forward to talking to her when I saw her at Dr. Farmers , she gave the best hugs .
Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time . She will be missed ❤️

  6. My deepest sympathies to Mark, Brad & families for their loss, as well as to Allison & her family. I met Margaret, & Don, at Spinnaker Point back in 2002 & we became good friends over the many winters we spent there together. Margaret was a very special lady, with an outgoing personality & a wonderful heart.

I have so many great memories of times spent together, especially at some of the spontaneous & fun ECPs! (Emergency Cocktail Parties) She will never be forgotten. May she RIP.
