Arthur O. Clark, 85, of Sanford, died at his home, surrounded by family on Sunday, September 29, 2013.Arthur was born in Sanford on April 20, 1928 to Frank and Evelyn (Monohan) Clark where he grew up and attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School. Following high school he proudly served in the U.S. army during the Korean War. After completing his enlistment Arthur attended the University of Maine, Orono and received his degree in civil engineering. He was employed as a civil engineer for several large corporations and was Auburn's city planner/engineer when Auburn won a national "All American City" award. He also worked as the city planner for Lewiston, the town manager for Ogunquit, a civil engineer for the Maine D.O.T and as site manager for several large bridge projects.Arthur was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an accomplished chess player and competed on teams, clubs and in tournaments for many years. Later in his life he became interested in researching family genealogy and history. Arthur had a great interest in studying the culture, cuisine, history language and economics of China and was successful in establishing a sister state/province relationship between the state on Maine and Jilin Province in China. Arthur organized the United States-China Peoples Friendship Alliance of Maine and also served on the national board. The local branch of this organization is now known as the Chinese-American Friendship Association on Maine. It is said that when an elderly person passes away that we lose a library. This is certainly the true of Arthur Owen Clark. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.Arthur was predeceased by his wife of 26 years, Shirley Bourque Clark.Surviving are his four children, Patricia Clark Estes of Auburn, Belinda Davis of Auburn, Sue-Ellen Clark of Auburn and Frank W. Clark, II of Sanford; many grandchildren and many great grandchildren. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 4th at Oakdale Cemetery, located on Twombley Road in Sanford.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
