Gary A. Chagnon
Gary A. Chagnon, 67, of Sanford died on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.Gary was born in Plattsburg, NY on December 28, 1942 to Arthur and Hazel (Tebo) Chagnon. He grew up in Ellinburg, NY and attended local schools. After school Gary enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. Gary was employed in construction for most of his working life. When he was younger he did roofing and as he got older he gradually shifted to carpentry work. He also served as the superintendent for Peterborough Housing for a time while he was living in Boston. Gary was known as the neighborhood handyman wherever he lived. Whenever somebody in the neighborhood needed a project done they would go to him for help and guidance. Gary enjoyed fishing and working around his house. He was never a person who enjoyed sitting around and always seemed to find something to do. Family was a very important part of his life. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Gary was very proud of his military service and was a member of several veterans groups including the AMVETS, the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. Gary will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.Surviving are his wife, Anne Chagnon of Sanford; his daughter, Theresa Morley and her husband Warren of Sanford and four grandchildren, Michael Morley, Danielle Morley, Michelle Morley and Jack Morley, all of Sanford. Interment with military honors will be held at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale at a future date.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 333 1/2 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20003-1148.Arrangements are through Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home in Springvale.
