Valde A. Chabot, 92, of Springvale, died on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Newton Center in Sanford. He was born in Sanford on May 10, 1924 to the late Romeo and Rosa (Fortier) Chabot. He attended local schools and graduated from Sanford High School. He married Rollande Ross in 1948 and together they raised two children. Valde served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict. He served on the USS Pittsburg and was on it in the South Pacific when 104 feet of its bow broke off in a typhoon. After fighting the storm for 7 hours, it finally let up and the Pittsburg was able to maneuver backwards 900 miles to Guam with no loss of life.When he returned from the military he went to work in his family owned business The Sanford Dairy. He signed on for an apprentice at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard under the GI Bill to be a first class machinist and then progressed to the inspection department. He remained there until his retirement.Valde lived a very active life. Some things that he enjoyed were biking, cross country skiing, and playing tennis which he did well into his eighties. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage on Mousam Lake where he liked to swim and taught all of his grandchildren how to dive. He loved to garden, and shared his vegetables with those around him. He also brewed beer with his grandson Matthew and volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years.He was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Sanford-Springvale.Being a selfless and generous man, he always put others before himself. He was devoted to his wife and very supportive of her. He made an impact on those he met and will be dearly missed. Valde is predeceased by two brothers, George and Fern Chabot. Survivors include his wife Rollande Chabot, a son, Dan Chabot and his wife Arlene of Springvale, a daughter, Denise Pepin and her husband David of Springvale, three sisters, Therese Angers and husband Noel of Dover,NH, Cecile Shea and husband Tom, of Alexandria, Virginia, Mariette Rossignol and husband Cliff of Scarborough, five grandchildren, Jennifer Chabot Bickford of Lebanon, Michael Chabot of Nashua,NH, Matthew Pepin of Portland, Luke Pepin of Springvale, Isaac Pepin, of Springvale , and one great granddaughter, Emily Chabot.The family would like to thank the staff at Newton Center for their incredible care and compassion for their father.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 2 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
