Roger G. Caron
Roger G. Caron, 81, a longtime resident of Sanford, died June 11 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford after a lengthy illness. He was born in Biddeford on January 21, 1931, the son of Jean-Baptiste Caron and Eva (Morin) Caron. He grew up in Springvale and attend local schools.He served with the US Air Force in Korea and upon his return home, he served 2 years in the National Guard. He was married to Cecile L. Guillemette of Sanford until her death in 2000, just months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary, together they raised 5 children.Survivors include his son, George Caron of Lewiston, daughter Cindy Caron Dubay and her husband Alfred of Lebanon, with whom he resided, son, Mark Caron, of Acton, and Harrisburg, PA, daughter, Elsie Caron Newton and her husband Tom of Lewiston, daughter, Cathy Caron McClintock of Lewiston, 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Roger was employed as a driver for Adams Trucking in South Sanford for 17 years. For many years, he and his wife Cecile owned and operated three moccasin factories, two in Maine and one in Berlin, NH. He finished his working career as a machinist with Bath Iron Works. Roger was a member of the Elks Lodge in Sanford and the Springvale Social Club. He had many hobbies, but his favorite was constructing scale model aircraft from scratch and flying them with a club he belonged to.He was granted two U.S. Patents, one for the creation of a snowmobile track and the other for a mechanical switch design for wireless remote control for model airplanes. He also enjoyed many fishing trips with his son-in-law Al to Rangeley and to Long Lake in St. Agatha in northern Maine. One of his favorite places was Alaska. He, his son Mark and Mark's son Tony traveled there and took a tour by small plane over Denali State Park and Mt. McKinley. He talked about that trip for years. He ventured there 2 more times after that trip as he called it "the most beautiful place he had ever been" Roger will be sadly missed by family and friends and the breakfast crew at Sunnyside Cafe in Springvale where he went every morning for years to "See the Boys" and hear the latest and keep informed of what was happening in town. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. Ritualistic service by members of Sanford Lodge #1470, BPOE will take place at 6:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 AM at the Holy Family Church of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, 66 North Avenue, Sanford. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.
