Richard E. Bowen

Richard Ermont Bowen was born in Sanford, a son of Catherine V. (Crowley) Bowen and Ermont Calvin Bowen. He graduated from Sanford High School, class of 1967, and the University of Maine Orono in 1971 with a degree in Secondary Education.Following his graduation from UMO, he taught English at Waterville High School before moving on to Illinois and then California. He spent a period of time as Headmaster of Stanbridge Academy in California, where his interest in working with learning disabled children was put to good use.Richard returned to Maine several years ago, living first in Kennebunk and later with his sister and brother in law in Springvale after he developed Parkinson's Disease.He was a member of Springvale Lodge #190, AF & AM, and Ruth Chapter #14 OES, where he had served as Worthy Patron.He loved to travel and spent a significant number of winters in Belize where he made many friends. This last winter he chose to stay in Merida, Mexico, where he ultimately passed away on May 3, 2018. Richard is survived by his sister, Patricia Beals, brother in law, Ellis W. Beals, nephews, Edward (Tim) Beals of Kennebunk and Eric T. Beals of Lyman, and niece Laurie K. Beals of Springvale.A celebration of his life will be held on May 31, 2018 at 7PM at Crossroads United Methodist Church on Grammar Road, Sanford.
