Muriel Black

Muriel C. Black, 78, of Sanford, died on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.Muriel was born in Biddeford on August 8, 1934 to Arthur and Amanda (Germain) Tremblay and attended local schools, graduating from St. Andre's High School in 1952. She was employed in the banking industry for many years before going on to work as an administrative assistant at Kennebunk adult education where she stayed until her retirement. In 1985 she married her husband of 27 years, Robert Black.Muriel was very devoted to her church. She was particularly close to the Brothers of Christian Instruction and was a communicant of the Notre Dame Chapel in Alfred for many years. She had been a columnist for the Church World, the former diocesan newspaper. She had also published articles in several other Catholic magazines. She was active in the Charismatic movement and had served for several years as the publicity director for St. Thomas School in Sanford. Muriel and her husband enjoyed traveling to many different places. Over the years they had the opportunity to take road trips to all of the lower 48 states and all of the provinces in Canada, visiting many family and friends along the way. Since the 1940's she had been an avid letter writer, sending notes to anybody that she knew that could use an encouraging word. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Muriel was predeceased by two grandsons, Joshua and Jon Sylvestre.Surviving are her husband, Robert Black of Sanford; three children, Sandra Black and her husband Christopher of Sanford, Carol Maddox and her companion Dawn Maxim of Sebago and James Sylvestre and his wife Sharon of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Samuel and Amanda Black of Sanford, Alexandria Maddox of Portland and Jessica Luptak and her husband Xanthin of Colorado Springs, CO and five step-children, Robert Black and his wife Dana Hartley and their daughter Tori, Elizabeth Black and her companion Michael Savageau, Kathleen Largay and her husband Nicholas and their children Rachel, Bryce and Colby, Bernadine Johnson and her husband William and Douglas Black and his wife Karen and their children Kayle, Sierra and Keanan.Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, December 6th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 7th at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church, located on Payne Street in Springvale.
