Melvin H. "Cuddy" Westcott, 87, of Alfred, died on Monday, October 10, 2011 at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Cuddy was born in Sanford on August 27, 1924 at the H. Danforth Hospital on School Street to James M. and Ora G. (Gowen) Westcott. He was a 1942 graduate of Sanford High School. On May 24, 1946 he married Earlene B. Webber in East Barre, Vermont. He served in the U.S. Army during the World War II, achieving the rank of Sergeant. During his military career he participated in three major battles and was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery.After returning to Sanford in 1946, Cuddy owned and operated the Esso station at the corner of Main Street and Winter Street in Sanford. Eleven years later he began his career as the owner of Westcott Ford Sales in Springvale. This important chapter of his life lasted for 32 years before retiring in 1987.Cuddy was a member of Preble Lodge #143 A.F. and A.M., the Ruth Chapter #14 O.E.S., the Sanford Elks Lodge, the American Legion and a past member of the Sanford Rotary Club. He was also a member of the board of directors for Springvale National Bank and served a president of the Dollars for Scholars and Sanford High Boosters Club.Throughout his life Cuddy sponsored many youth athletic groups and took a keen interest in them. For the past 22 years he enjoyed his winter home at Bayside Estates in Fort Myers Beach, Florida and took joy in traveling.Cuddy was predeceased by his parents and by a sister, Glenna (Westcott) Picken.Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Earlene Westcott; four children, Susan D. Watkins and her husband John, Sara Kallis and her husband Scott, James H. Westcott and his wife Deborah and Mary E. Matheson and her husband James; five granddaughters, Jessica S. Kallis, Lucinda M. Kallis-Hilbert, Lindsey M. Westcott, Anna E. Matheson and Meg W. Matheson; two grandsons, Joshua R. Watkins and Ryan J. Westcott; three great-grandchildren, Zella Kallis-Hilbert, William Watkins and Emma Watkins and two siblings, Nathalie G. Well and David G. Westcott and his wife Judy.Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 13th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 14th.
