Lawrence E. Wentworth
Lawrence E. Wentworth, 74, of Sanford, died at his home on Sunday, April 19, 2009 after a courageous battle with ALS.Lawrence was born in Sanford on May 21, 1934 to Louis and Mildred (English) Wentworth and attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School in 1952. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. In 1956, He married Eileen Maynard and together the couple raised three sons. Lawrence also attended the University of New Hampshire where he received his associate's degree. During his working life, Lawrence worked as a mechanic at Adam's Trucking and at York Utilities in Sanford. After York Utilities closed, he went on to work at Davidson Rubber in Farmington, NH as a mechanical technician where he stayed until his retirement in 1993.Lawrence was a very hardworking man and always liked to keep himself busy. He enjoyed doing work around his house and helping out friends and family. He liked to work on cars and was particularly fond of old cars and his truck. He was a member of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish Sanford/Springvale and also did volunteer work at the York County Shelter. Since retiring, Lawrence and his wife enjoyed spending winters in Florida. He was a devoted family man and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Lawrence will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his friends and family.Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Eileen Wentworth of Sanford; three sons, Ronald Wentworth of New York City, NY; Robert Wentworth of Springvale; Jeff Wentworth and his partner Denise O'Connell of Sanford; 6 grandchildren, Christopher, Randi, Amanda, Sara, Jami and Delani; two brothers, Leighton Wentworth and his wife Joyce of Shapleigh and Kenneth Wentworth and his wife Nancy of Sanford, a sister, Viola Legere of Alexandria, VA and several nieces and nephews.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 22nd at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church located on Payne Street in Springvale. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to ALS Association Northern New England Chapter, 60 Pearl Street, Portland, ME 04101.Arrangements are through Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home in Sanford.To leave a message of condolence for the family, please click on the Condolences tab at left.
