Fred R. Webber, 83, of Shapleigh, died on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Fred was born in Springvale on November 17, 1932 to Theodore and Bernadine (Ridley) Webber Dunnells. He grew up in Shapleigh where he attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School in 1951. Following high school, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. While in the Navy, he served on seven ships and traveled to numerous ports around the world. During the Vietnam Conflict he was stationed at Don Tam in the Delta from 1968-1969. He retired from the Navy in 1971 after proudly serving his country for 20 years. After serving in the military, Fred enjoyed 45 years of retirement and held several part-time jobs. He wintered in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for 35 years where he established some very close friendships with people who became like a second family to him. He was an outgoing social man with many friends. Fred enjoyed collecting coins, special edition merchandise, stamps and other items. He was a life member of several clubs and organizations including The American Legion, V.F.W., AMVETS, Elks, Wolves Club and Springvale Social Club. Fred will be remembered as a loving and devoted brother, uncle and friend and will be dearly missed by his friends and family. Fred was predeceased by his parents and by two siblings, Edith Gove and Teddy Webber. Surviving are four siblings, Norma Evans of Shapleigh, Frances Eppich of Sarasota, Florida, Joy Clark and her husband Paul of Shapleigh and Clif Dunnells and his wife Debra of Shapleigh and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to noon with a funeral service following at noon on Tuesday, October 18th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. Interment with military honors will follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery located on Stanley Road in Springvale. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Acton-Shapleigh Historical Society, 122 Emery Mills Road, Shapleigh, Maine 04076. Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
