Glenys Bowen Thayer Vallely
Glenys Bowen Thayer Vallely, 96, of Springvale, passed away quietly on the morning of Tuesday, October 6, 2015 surrounded by family. Glenys was the daughter of Walter E. Bowen and Margaret Calvin Bowen Thompson. She was born February 27, 1919 in Springvale and attended Sanford Schools, graduating from Sanford High School in 1937. She also attended American International College in Springfield, MA majoring in clerical studies. She was employed as a secretary by the Goodall-Sanford Mills, the Maine Cooperative Extension Service in Alfred and Thayer-Diggery Company in Sanford. She was a member of the Springvale First Baptist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a member and Past Matron of Ruth Chapter Number 14, Order of the Eastern Star in Springvale. During her high school years she was an active participant in several high school musicals and often sang duets with her sister Marilyn primarily at Eastern Star events in the Southern Maine area. She enjoyed spending summers at her cottage on Square Pond for over fifty years.She was predeceased by her first husband, Edwin M. Thayer, daughter, Pamela Thayer Mayberry, her second husband, J. Woodrow Vallely, brothers Clinton and Ermont Bowen, and by her sister Marilyn Merrifield. Surviving are her son Stephen E. Thayer of Springvale, and his wife Elizabeth and three grandchildren, Brianne Mayberry Lawry, her husband Todd Lawry, Megan C. Thayer Swanger, her husband Michael P. Swanger, and Mark E. Thayer and Ashley Burton. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and by five great-grandchildren.A simple graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 10th at the Oakdale Cemetery, located on Twombley Road in Sanford.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution to Hart (Homeless Animal Rescue Team), PO Box 351, Cumberland Maine 04021.
