Wilfrid J. "Chub' Turmelle, 86, of Springvale and North Yarmouth, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008 at the Maine Veterans Nursing Home in Scarborough. Born in Quebec City on February 26, 1922, a son of the late Theodore J. and Clara M. (Smith) Turmelle.Wilfrid graduated from Sanford High School in 1940. His working career began in the Sanford Mills until he enlisted in the Army in 1942 serving in both Korea and japan during WWII. For his service he was a recipient of the Bronze Star. Mr. Turmelle retired from the Army in 1966 from the US Army as a Master Sergeant (E-7). Returning to the Springvale area he continued his working career at Cyanamid for several years until moving in 1972 to the Cumberland area to be married. He married the former Frances B. McLeary in 1972 at North Yarmouth, and continued his working career on the Housekeeping Staff at Pineland Center until his retirement.He was a member of the Sanford VFW.Mr. Turmelle is predeceased by one brother, Edgar 'Blackie' Turmelle.He is survived by his wife, Frances Turmelle of Portland, a brother, Robert Turmelle and his wife, Margaret of Enfield, CT. One sister in law, Ruth Turmelle of Sanford and stepchildren, Gail Strattard of North Yarmouth, Glenne M. Gray of Gray, Fred McLeary of Anchorage, Alaska, Bonnie Clariot of Portland and Allison Rimkunas of Gorham, as well as many nieces and nephews and step grandchildren.The family wishes to thank the Staff at the Maine Veterans Home is Scarborough for the care and consideration given to Willie during his 5+ year residence with them. Their care and caring were much appreciated.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday April 12 at 11am at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Catholic Church in Springvale.A Graveside Service with military honors will be held later this spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale.To leave a message of condolence please use the "condolences" tab to the left or go to ktk@landmarkpartners.com.
