Harold T. Trafton
Harold T. Trafton was born in Mars Hill on June 1, 1909, the son of G. Harold and Leona S. Trafton. He passed away on May 23rd, a week from his 99th birthday.He grew up in Mapleton and graduated from Mapleton High School. He was the last surviving member of the Class of 1927. He attended the Maine School of Commerce in Auburn after high school. He married Miriam M. Diggery of Sanford on September 9, 1939. During the war he served with Patton's army throughout the European campaign.After the war he and Miriam settled in Sanford and he resumed his career as a traveling sales representative, selling meat products to restaurants throughout Maine for the Albert Richards Company of Boston.He was a member of United Commercial Travelers, the Preble Lodge of Masons and the Kora Temple Shrine. He was a founding member of the Knights of the Road and was its first president. He also was a member of the Sanford Town Club and, as a member of the Sanford Golf Club, had been an avid golfer since 1939. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sanford.He was predeceased by his wife Miriam in March, 2008 and his brother Wilfred and sisters Annie and Margaret. He is survived by nephews Dana Dow of Georgia, Duane Dow of Connecticut, Larry Dow of North Carolina, Darrell Dow and Richard Dow of Florida, Doug Baston of Alna, and Bruce Herrick of Sanford, and nieces Maureen Kierstead and Leona Akeley of Mapleton, as well as several grand nieces and nephews.With Harold's passing we lose another member of the Greatest Generation.There will be a graveside interment service for both Harold and Miriam at the Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford on June 30th at 11: 00 A.M.
